How to clean motors ?
#1
Hello,
I have finally put my machine into a muddy field !

After retrieving my aircraft, Thank you Dronekeeper !!!, what a great investment !

I realized, mud had gotten into the bell, I removed the c clip and cleaned the bell and stator. I used alcohol to clean the bell and stator, was that a good idea ?

After I reinstalled the bell, it spun nice and free, after I reinstalled the old c clip, it definitely got tighter.....

My 2 questions are this:

Should I use a new c clip, the old one seems a little " loose", from me removing it ?

Does installing the c clip cause the bell to "compress" against the bearings causing the "tight" feel, if the bearings are dirty as well ?

Thank you for any help

Alcohol can get into the bearings and isn't the best lubricant I would say. I normally wash them in water and oil them if they get too muddy. The bearings will eventually wear out, but they are easy to replace.

If there is room for an e clip, I would go for those instead. 2.5mm e clips from eBay will fit a 3mm shaft.

C-clips are not intended to be re-used. Once you take one off, you should fit a new one. It may well be that the old clip is slightly deformed and is pressing against the bearing.

Alcohol probably wasn't the best thing to use. If it gets into the bearings it will dissolve the grease they are packed with and wash it away. Tap water is the best for getting mud out of your motors. You should make sure that you dry them off afterwards so that the stator doesn't rust. So, get some new c-clips and start regularly lubricating the bearings on that motor with light machine oil. The kind used on sewing machines is a good match.

While it's rare to see sealed bearings used on quads, they do, at least, have a shield that should keep the worst out.

I simply use compressed air.
Every time I come back from a flight on a field/grass I do it. Is the same I also do on my DJI Mavic.
Simple, easy, and effective.  Tongue

By the way I don´t mess with the C-clip, unless there is clearly something affecting the bearings.

E clips are reusable and easier to remove/install
