How to choose Props?
#1
If you've seen my "Cheap250" Mini build thread you'll know that I bought a EMAX "set" of 2204-2300kv motors / 20A ESCs / 6045 Carbon Props.

While the props don't clean the frame in one build layout I'm lucky that I can use the frame in an "under slung" configuration.

Then I realised I need to buy spare props, and learning to fly with Carbon Props seems to be inviting exciting hours with tweezers extracting CF shards from my delicate areas.

So aside from dropping diameter to 5", how do I choose a prop?

Lets ignore the Bull-nose, Hybrid Bull-nose or rounded tips for the moment and talk the "pitch" (is that the right term?)

So a 5045 would have the same pitch as the 6045, but 1" shorter? If the maker of my motors supplies a 6045 should a 5045 be my starting point?

Or should I just grab a few pairs of each and just get down to snapping them on bad "landings" and eventually I'll develop flight mojo that will help me understand which props "feel" right for my crashing style?

Lets break down the numbers, Props come listed as 3030, 3045, 4040, 5045 etc, the first 2 numbers denote size..as in length in inches. the second pair of numbers is the pitch, so a 3045 prop is 3 inches long with a blade pitch of 4.5.

Higher pitched props do generally draw more amps from the lipo and in some cases pooch the lipo as the lipo was just not powerful enough (that is a different topic)

Higher pitched props do give more "bite" than lower pitch, and you quad will fly and feel different with different pitched props.

I have a few 130 sized quads that run 3 inch props, on 1306 4000kV motors, the 3045 triples work great but zap the life out of the lipo pretty quick..in terms of flight times, the 3030 twin bladed props do not offer as much "bite", grip but actually feel better all round and are no where near the drain on the battery.

Props are one of the most important things on any quad, and I doubt anyone can tell you what is right for you, as we all have our own personal preference. the key is, experiment.

But get rid of the carbon props..no place in my view on a racer/freestyle type quad, costly, break /chip very easily and then completely useless, at least the nylon composite type props can take small hits (and some large one) and generally keep going enough to get you home.

The DAL type "indestructable props may not actually break straight away and more often bend into some sort of John Merrick look-alike but can still get you home..but worth noting that once they bend up or down that much, get rid of them, bending them back into shape never really works out and can cause you more problems than the cost of a prop is worth..ditch them.

As to your question of what size prop is the correct size in length for your quad. as a guide only here.

130-150 sized quads, 3 inch
180 sized 4 inch
210-250 5 inch
270 6 inch

Of course the larger quads can run smaller props if you want, Many times I have ran 4 inch props on my 210 class because I ran out of 5 inch props.

Hope some parts of my ramblings has helped.

this is a really delicate subject Aaron, and you're going to get a lot of different answers and opinions. some people are going to running a 5045 is like running a 6030. some people are going to say they prefer a Tri blade for Acro and a quad blade for racing. I'm no expert on props but I know what feels right for my style of flying. but to me the concept is this, thrust to efficientcy ratio. if you use a blade with a higher pitch your going to get more thrust but it's going to be less efficient, and while you're going to get a better a response and quicker spin up using a 5" blade vs using a 6" blade. so it depends on your flying really. but I would really advise you to stay away from carbon fiber props. they may look nice, but as soon as you knick something they splinter up.

Im currently using two blade 5045 BN props they have plenty of punch but I have nothing else to compare them to. I am going to get tri blades at some point and see what the difference is.

The DYS 5040 tri blades have been getting good reviews, these are what I want to try next.
Current quad: ZMR 250 / DYS SE2205 / Littlebee 20A ESCs / Drone Lab 1500 4S / Naze32 Rev5 / BF 2.7.1
FPV: Runcam Skyplus / Aomway 200mw VTX / Fatshark DomV1

what's up HampsterFPV? I would highly recommend the new RK Props. they are practically industricable. I've hit trees, slammed into concrete, even hit another quad mid air and dropped about 50 feet and they still didn't break.

I've just had a look at those but I can't find any in the UK and postage from the US is too much.

well after doing a power loop straight into the ground, and cracking my frame's top and bottom plate. but if you notice the props are still in one piece lol. ok I have one bent prop but it's still on there. these RK props out last the quad itself.

I definitely need to get me some of these, should be $4 per set with postage to the UK.
