How to change VTX channel safely at the field?
#1
If you have a push button vtx, and are out on a field with others around, you are in a tricky spot because you can't jump to a free channel without them landing (you'll need to channel hop first).

Could you use something like a restricter, dummy antenna or some other way to cut transmitting power temporarily?

You can buy an attenuator or a dummy load. for example this one

I have also seen people DIY it, by taking a connector, an 1 watt 50 ohm resister and make your own. I never tried it myself, but I would think that it would still radiate a bit.

There are self termination circuits but they are bulky, which is why our radios don't have them.

Or simply put a metal bowl over your quad LOL

But seriously, I think everyone at a race should figure out the VTX channels people they take off, Know your VTx before you go to a field with other people and make sure you're on the right channel before you power on.

Even then, most VTxs do a broadcast before settling into a specific channel, so call out before you plug in, make sure anybody flying is aware of what is about to happen, and keep your hand on your connector and your eyes on the pilots in case you step on someone by accident.

The reason I still prefer DIP switches to push buttons. Smile

I have tried a dummy load on my 200 mW vtx and I jammed the signal to my mate next to me.  A dummy load is still going to be like a shotgun close range
So if you are going to change channel when others are airborne then you have to be a good distance away from them
