How do I check if a TX is compatible with PPM?

My colleague and me are we building this FPV Micro Quad: https://oscarliang.com/fpv-micro-quad-beef-board/
We have a TX from other Quad (a toy) but we tried bind them with unsuccessful result. I guess our TX doesn't support PPM, but I'm not completely sure. The TX doesn't have any sticker or code for looking for related information.

         

If the problem is compatibility with PPM, maybe could you recommend us a TX cheaper than Taranis compatible with PPM for beginners?

Hi there!

PPM is a protocol used between the receiver and the flight controller so it has nothing to do with the communication between your radio and your receiver. For those 2 to work together they need to support a common protocol like DSM2 or DSMX just for instance.

Chances are that your toy radio and the receiver you're using aren't compatible. What are the brands and models of your parts?

There are several cheap alternatives to the Taranis, for example the FlySky radios/receivers are quite decent and reasonably cheap.

The receiver is Micro FrX http://fisselrc.com/microfrx/
But I'm not sure what type TX is. I'll try open it and look for something useful for identify the protocol in the TX.

i6 will only be compatible with flysky receivers, you have a frsky one which uses different protocol.

I opened the TX and I didn't see anything related to DSMX, DSM2, DJT, DFT, DHT, XJT...

       

I think RX and TX are not compatibles so I should buy a new TX. Probably this works, although I find it a bit expensive (my idea was something about 80$ max.):  http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...ch=taranis

There is a cheaper radio that can accept a frsky module (bought separately): http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...dule_.html

But I don't know much about it, maybe we have someone here that uses a 9xr pro?

if you're on a 80$ budget, I would probably go for the flysky fs-i6 (45$) (or the new fs-i6x for 50$, maybe not released yet). there is a receiver included with both of them which supports ibus/ppm/pwm.

Hi all!

I have just received the flysky fs-i6 but I don't get this work. I'm following the instruction from: http://fisselrc.com/microfrx/#binding
  1. Remove all power.
  2. Turn your TX on in binding mode. (Bind Key on fs-i6)
  3. Temporarily short(connect) the "BIND" pads (I use tweezers)
  4. Once bound you should get a steady slow blinking light.  <-- This doesn't happen
  5. Remove all power.
  6. Make sure Bind pins are no longer shorted(connected).
  7. Reset TX or Turn off binding mode.
  8. Turn on your TX and RX.
  9. You should now be bound
Microfrx has a red light that stays on. I'm not sure about the meaning of this light because in the FAQ only says 3.3V (Does it means voltage is OK?)

In addition, I flashed the controller with last firmware version of Naze32. In a validation step I got "STM32 communication failed, wrong response, expected: 121 (0x79) received: 31 (0x1f)" but I can connect to clean flight. I found something related to this: Fixing STM32 communication failed but neither I found the "BOOT pins" for this controller so I couldn't apply this solution.

Any idea or advise?

You must power up the RX, i have added in your steps.

I powered up the RX but with the same result. This is the video with my try:


Maybe I performed a mistake or something is missing. 
Might be the tweezers do not transmit enough power, they are completely metallic and I take them with the fingers (just to say something). The voltmeter between BIND pins displays 2.9V which I guess is a normal value.
