horizon mode doesn't seem to work right
#1
hello,
a few months ago, i bought a quadcopter. because of unknown reasons, an ESC burnt out on the first flight. yesterday, i replaced the ESC, soldering and all. the motor is spinning like it should be spinning, but still something seems very odd. when i put the drone in ''air mode (?)'' (betaflight, the standard mode), the sound the drone makes is fine. it goes from smooth to a harder and harder sound. when i choose horizon mode with my controller, the drone makes a loud, hard noise at the very first millimeter i move the throttle. not smooth at all. the same happens for angle mode. i have no idea how to fix this, but it can't be right like this. the sound should start smooth instead of extremely noisy and hard at the very first millimeter. is this some kind of setting i should adjust? im a fpv newb, if you haven't noticed already. i just really don't want to burn out another ESC again.
thanks

Two things:

If you are doing this on the bench without propellers, stop!

Did you perform a calibration on the ESCs after installing the new one?

i indeed did this without propellers. why is that bad? I also haven't done a calibration on the ESCs, is there a guide you recommend?

When you arm the quad, you are asking it to fly. If it's on the bench without propellers, when the flight controller asks the quad to do something, nothing happens, so it tries harder and harder. It's not a useful or meaningful way to test things.

Calibrating your ESCs is simple, but you might not even need to do so.

What ESCs are you using on what flight controller and are you using DShot?

i have the wizard x220, so it has 3 of the standard ESCs (BLHELI_S 20A 2-4S lipo). the other ESC (BLHELI_S 20A V2 2-4S lipo) was sent by the supplier. the flight controller is the standard flight controller of the wizard x220. i do not use DShot.

Then you need to calibrate your ESCs so that they all have the same understanding of the throttle signal.

Here's a handy video:

alright, i have done the calibration and the motors work fine. so you are saying that it doesn't matter that in horizon mode, the speed doesn't go up smoothly without props? thanks anyway, we will see soon if the ESC burns out again haha...

As unseen stated earlier on the bench it's pointless as in any self leveling mode the flight controller gyro is attempting to change motor speed in order to keep the quad level. Put some props on and go fly it should be fine.
