Hello intoFPV

Smile
Just joined about an hour ago, and thought I'd start off by introducing myself here. Seems like the right thing to do  Smile

My name is Eric, and I live in the Netherlands. Haarlem, to be exact. Just added that ot the FPV map here on this site.
I already passed the 50 years of age mark, and work as a mechanical engineer in machine building (defense and automotive before that).

I stem from 1:1 aviation, and started tinkering with Arduinos and Raspberry Pies about three yers ago. Somewhere along the line, I found that others had made a flight controller out of an Arduino UNO, so I just had to make that work too. So, after an initial "investment" in the cheapest possible transmitter / receiver combo, I tinkered away until I got the PWM values on an LCD screen, and then I knew for sure I could make that work. Then I needed to create a quad. So I bought a frame, ESCs, motors - all cheap ass of course  Rolleyes
Long story short: the life of a quad flyer (build, fly, crash, repair, fly, crash, repair, ... repeat for ever) had started. All LOS, then.
In the mean time, I also got myself a model airplane to play with, and I won a big, foldable quad from a prize draw at another (Dutch) forum. The fleet was gatting to amount to somethng.

Now I recently got asked by GearBest to review some RC stuff for them, and one of the first things I got sent to review was a race / freestyle 210 drone. I also needed some goggles to go with that, so I requested a cheap set (expecting I would get "no" for an expensive one). You can read all about it at my blog on RC flying. But what it comes down to is that I just lost my FPV virginity  Big Grin . With only 4 minutes under the hood, I would hardly call me an expert. But I'll get there! It's just too bad that it is getting winter, now. I go to work in the dark, and get back in the dark. So I only get to fly during weekends, and then it has not really been nice flying weather for a beginner like myself (lots of wind, and rain, hail, thunder even...). So it is taking longer than I hoped to get me some more flying time. But hey, I already know this is addictive, and that I want to go on and learn. And that's the most important thing, I think!

Oh, and yes, I will be spamming you with GearBest coupon codes and affiliate links, if that's allowed here. Just gimme a shout if and when I'm overstepping boundaries.
But first of all, I want to read on this forum. I'm here to learn first and foremost!

Cheers!
Eric

(Officially it's Eric-Jan, Eric-J. for short, which is pronounced "ericje" in Dutch; hence my nickname)

Welcome to the best FPV forum online Eric!

GearBest also contacted me to review and promote items for them, and offered me $50 per month to write promo articles. I wrote about 12 promo articles for them over about 3 months, and was sent a quadcopter to review. After going backwards and forwards for about a month, trying to find a quad that was under $100, not discontinued, and in stock. Finally Gearbest selected to send me the JXD 509G to review... This quad is not great, it's not even good. I tried to explain that there would be minimal impact or sales generated from this site for a review of this quad, which succeeded in looking cool, but very little else!

Because, unsurprisingly, there was not a single sale generated from my review, and despite the fact that I had said that this would be the case, Gearbest will not send me anything else to review. I also had to argue and hassle to get the money they offered to pay for my articles, They said that I would be payed after I had written my review, which they did, but only for 1 month, not the 3 months that I had been writing.

This isn't a rant, or even a moan, just a heads up - Make sure that the items they send you for review will be well received by the community otherwise it may be the last item they send...

Anyway, as I said, Welcome to the forum Eric, I hope you enjoy your time here as much as I do!

Thanks all, for the warm welcome!

@ Tom BD Bad: Yeah, I'll see where this GB adventure takes me. At the very least I got that BFight 210 and goggles, plus I just got some toy drones and an X-155 kit to assemble. So if I don't get any commision or what not, and no more stuff sent out to me, I'll still have something for my troubles. All it has cost me so far is one Lipo (didn't have 4S yet).

And of course, I got me a new addiction Big Grin

Funny, the BFlight  210 was one of the items I wrote a promo article for, looked like it had a pretty good spec sheet, if memory serves. How is to fly?

Hi E-J Smile

Yes, we touched base, Walter and me, in response to my first FPV flight piece in my blog. I think it was on Facebook, though. Haven't met him IRL yet, but I'm sure that will come in time. He's in a totally different league than I am, though.

Where do you fly?
I hold a PPL (Private Pilot's License), so I don't want to fly outside in the Schiphol CTR - I may be expected to know my airspace structure, and Air Law...
So closest is Zandvoort, but if I also want to avoid Natura 2000, there's not much room left. And that is exactly what I still need right now: lots of undisturbed room!  Big Grin So flying inside is not really a good idea still. First I need to develop some "thumb feeling" before I dare fly close to stuff (or people  Rolleyes )
