I think a PDB might actually be a neat idea to etch by yourself. But you would need to do some finishing on it, because bare copper is absolutely disgusting to solder if you want to use SMT components. Silver or at least Zink coating would be necessary.

I have made quite a few PCBs but they were mostly for through hole. I experimented with making leave-on solder masks by cutting kapton take in my vinyl cutter. That worked pretty well and made the SMT soldering reasonably easy. I don't think that Kapton tape would last long on a quad though .
I always intend to try some of the solder mask that you laminate on then UV expose with a mask... hmm, maybe later
I find it pretty hard to shop for this type of supplies in German
