I started quad flying with a cheap Syma X5 and progressed to a Walkera Rodeo 150. I made a mistake by switching to Rate mode without really thinking about what it actually meant for controlling the quad proper. With the power it had I quickly panicked and it went full power inverted into the ground ripping off the vtx antenna, bending and cracking the vtx board as well as cracking one of the motor arms. Of course I know I should have practised on a simulator before attempting something that stupid, but we’ve all been there I reckon; friends, testosterone, challenge put forward and a little alcohol might have been involved clouding judgement. It wasn’t my finest hour. For the longest time the parts for it were backordered and then suddenly flagged discontinued, something I had already experienced years back with a Walkera helo. So it really has turned me off from buying more of their kit. It seems like their models follow eachother up in far too quick succession. But randomly checking the internet last week I suddenly found what I needed, so after months I now have replacement parts coming in. It’s a great little quad and I will be happy to fly it again once its , but I did invest in some other toys in the mean time. I have a Taranis Q X7 transmitter now, Moskito whoop and a a Mobula7 is on its way to me, as is a FatShark Attitude v5. (used an Eachine DV2Pro Upgrade before, but dont much like it). I have also invested in a decent simulator so thats where the brunt of my time is going to be for now. In due time I want to try my hand at a mini quad DIY project, but for that I will need to first become more proficient in flying and I need to get more skill in soldering . Any tips are most welcome. Fun to read posts here! Fly on! Sounds like you're doing well there! As an old man and someone who doesn't like soldering the best advise I can offer is to get a TS-100 iron (or a TS-80 if that's the setup you like) and and spare tip or two, a really good helping hand and/or PCB vise and some quality 63/37 .3mm rosin core solder. Keep your iron hot (I set mine at about 310*C) and well-tinned, using extra flux sometimes helps a lot and if you want and make your connections quick and committed. This iron and using very fine solder has improved my soldering skill immensely just by virtue of the fact it all works very well together. I can't stop harping over this iron, it was a game-changer for me. Did I hear some news somewhere recently that FPV was actually banned in Holland? Hope not but anyway... Good luck with it all! Thank you all for the warm welcome! ProppedCodger thanks for your input. Could you perhaps link a few good helping hand and pcb vise options? Unfortunately drone flying in general has gotten the attention of the government, but at the same time I do understand why. As a professional pilot myself I am very much aware of the hazards drones can pose to safety in a small and crowded country in the air. Also privacy concerns by people have been raised with all those camera’s flying around. And while its mostly people who don’t really know much about RC flying I do think those that are busy with the hobby have to show exemplary behaviour and be responsible at all times. Unfortunately this isn’t always the case and so the government and media jump onto the hobby. While its true that rules have been sharpened FPV flying is not banned as far as I am aware, but what IS banned is flying FPV in the open without a ‘spotter’. e.g. someone warning you about your surroundings in case of danger to safety of objects and or people. Also, RC flying in general is only allowed in uncontrolled airspace (and up to a given altitude and drone size without having to have a proper operating license) and only when that airspace isnt over special nature areas, not around airfields or strips and not in low flying training areas for aircraft. Then there is another part completely governed by the privacy law about portrait right and filming (over ) private property, which is a can of worms really. But that has got nothing to do with drone regulations per say; its the camera usage. Anyway, I am happily fpv-ing . Sometimes some wiseass comes along telling me I am doing something illegal, but its usually just Joe the neighbour who hasnt got a clue whatsoever. I usually talk to them for a bit, show them whats its about and voila, we have a new member of the hobby! • Posts: 3,533 Threads: 265 Likes Received: 2,610 in 1,545 posts Likes Given: 3,893 Joined: Feb 2018 Reputation: 78 14-Oct-2019, 08:06 PM (This post was last modified: 14-Oct-2019, 08:07 PM by Krohsis.) I am pretty sure you are breaking some rules flying. For the tight space most of us fly in, I don't think we are harmful to anyone. Maybe the neighbors, they probably think that the FPV camera we have flying 100mph can see them in their birthday suite 500 ft away. Sometimes I have a hard time seeing the tree 2 feet away. I swear that tree moved. Posts: 77 Threads: 8 Likes Received: 50 in 33 posts Likes Given: 32 Joined: May 2019 Reputation: 2 Hi Robin, Welcome to the forums. Personally I use the STP stand and the Hakko vise. I don't know how many machines I built soldering on one of those HobbyKing carbon fibre pinch-vises. With a TS-100 iron in literal soldering heaven now. "Top Ten" STP Stand Hakko PCB Vise Thingi Hakko Style There are also numerous different ones on eBay and even "kits" you can print yourself using the Hakko vise design principle on Thingiverse, etc. Cheers • Posts: 33 Threads: 6 Likes Received: 5 in 4 posts Likes Given: 3 Joined: Oct 2019 Reputation: 0 Cheers! Pretty costly PCB Vise, but its obviously a premium product. Thanks for all the suggestions! About the TS100; would the basic kit be enough or would you recommend a specific configuration? • Posts: 181 Threads: 3 Likes Received: 39 in 35 posts Likes Given: 38 Joined: Oct 2019 Reputation: 3 15-Oct-2019, 07:41 PM (This post was last modified: 15-Oct-2019, 07:42 PM by ProppedCodger.) About the TS100; would the basic kit be enough or would you recommend a specific configuration? Basic kit is all you need but there are numerous configurtions in the box, usually the iron, a ground cable that you never need and 1 tip of your choice. You will need an XT60 to 2.5mm x 5.5mm center-positive adapter and at least a beefy 3S LiPo to power it. You can also get used laptop power supplies like this which will give you great performance. I use the I and C1 tips personally. There is an array of tips available, different shells, the Ralim custom firmware if you want to customize? I use this firmware on one of my irons and am having problems with the sensitivity and sleeping it but just use a button now, otherwise a great upgrade. • Posts: 54 Threads: 5 Likes Received: 13 in 13 posts Likes Given: 11 Joined: Sep 2019 Reputation: 0 Goedemorgen.
