Hello everyone!
#1
So not my 1st post, but Hi anyway!

My name is Tom, I'm 35, from London, England now living in small town in South Africa (far better flying weather!) I have been hooked on RC FPV since December last year when I came across this kickstarter project. 10 (flippin!) months later I'm expecting to receive delivery of my Powerup FPV BETA unit this week (forwarded from England.)

I have always loved planes, heli's, dragons and flying generally, one of my earliest memories -
Mum "Tom, what do you want to be when you grow up?"
Tom "I wanna be a hijacker!"
Mum "What! Why do you want to be a hijacker?"
Tom "Cos they get to fly planes"
Mum "I think you mean you want to be a pilot?"
Tom *exasperated* "No mum, Pilots just fly the planes, hijackers get to fly the plane, and they get to parachute out!"
Obviously a bit mis-guided as to what a hijcker actually does.

Well, I did a skydive on my birthday (early Dec) 3 years ago (managed not to nick the plane, despite lack of security and metal detectors!) it was flippin wicked, but left me with an earache that persisted till after Christmas! So skydiving - not really my bag, getting a PPL (private pilots license) is cheaper in South Africa than almost anywhere else in the world, but still well out of my price range not even counting the cost of an aircraft.

Enter Powerup FPV(!) and the FPV bug has bit me, we don't get broadband on our farm so we attempt to use mobile data responsibly, but sadly 'Flite Test' and 'VEK FPV' among others on youtube, have put my internet usage up to over 5gb a month! I have grown an insatiable appetite for the hobby/sport or 'toys' as my wife accuses!

Anyway enough about that, I hope to be uploading some aerial video from my maiden voyage soon, we're away for the weekend so probably next week...

Thanks to everyone here for your help and insight!

Thanks, I'm feeling very welcome, it seems to be a very active community here!
I am definitely going to get an fpv micro quad in the air very soon, South Africa has very strict drone law though. regardless of weight RPAS (Remote Pilot Aviation Systems) can only be operated at registered aerodromes! Any aerial footage taken by a 'hobbyist' cannot be used for promotional or financial gain! The law does not restrict the use of toys though..!

I agree wholeheartedly, despite never owning a quad the freestyle-ability of quads is second to none.
However I have a cool business idea that requires something easy for 1st timers...

Go-Kart style - turn up and race - FPV drone racing!

I thought that the assisted pilot and crash detection, combined with fixed wing linear directional travel, (offered by the powerup FPV) would make it more difficult for 1st timers (like myself) to get lost and do damage to the 'drones.' Specially with a clearly defined circuit and landmarks to keep us oriented.

Anyway, still waiting for my Powerup FPV to come from my sister in London who sent it almost 3 weeks ago now..!

Thanks for all the welcome's guys Smile  As you may have noticed I still havent posted links to my powerup FPV maiden flight...
The reason for this is that instead of going from London, England to me here in South Africa, my paper plane drone is currently in Australia!
It wouldn't surprise me to learn that South Africa is outsourcing their customs control, I can think of no other reason for such a monumental cock-up, apart from maybe Royal Errr Mail is slightly more Poop  than they would have us believe!

Apparetly it should still arrive.?!
