Heavy Lifters
Howdy All,

I have just been made aware that I have won first prize in the "I love drones" photographic contest which is a bit ironic because at the present moment I certainly do not love drones. They are driving me mad!!!

How weird is that wot?   Dodgy

Prize winning photo below.

Thanks Reno, if you like that one the full size photo which I clipped to reduce the size is even better.

It shows Cook's River entering Botany Bay with Mascot (Kingsford Smith) airport complete with airliners in the background.

That was a fun day and attracted a small crowd to watch our goings on. Tongue

Aaahhh!! They were the days. How I miss them.

I have finished repairing the physical damage to Wooden It and now comes the hard part.

A serious vibration reduction effort.

Re-balance motors and props and stiffen up any other vibration causing items.

Not an easy task.

QUESTION;

Do any of you lads have any helpful tips on vibration reduction, balancing props, balancing motors?

Anything?

I need all the help I can get at the moment.   Cry

Regards,

Hey KK.
Here is a post on Oscars blog about soft mounting FC and Motors. I am not sure if it's advisable with the size of the motors on IT, and Oscar's concern over motor screws vibrating loose due to the 'hand tight' nature of soft mounting... Or even if there are vibration damping measures for motors as large as the ones used by IT?

I'm one of those people who try to make use of what is lying around, I thought that a couple of layers of inner-tube rubber cut to size, maybe even add a layer or 2 between the heads of the motor screws and the arms, add washers to ensure the rubber doesn't just slip over the screw heads, might help.

I just found this old vid detailing a very simple way to diagnose and fix motor vibrations.

Let us know how it goes...

I balanced the motors on my 450 a while back using an iphone and an app called Vibration.  (I think you can also use an android app.)

Anyway, this video is pretty old, but it's the one I followed:

NOTE: Be sure the tape you use is sticky enough that it won't fling off at high RPM. Can even go back and CA it after you're sure it's in the right spot (except that also can change the balance a bit).

Thanks BD, they were a big help. I had heard about the cable tie trick but had no idea how to measure results. I will mull over all of this over the coming days and get back to you.

Once again, thank you.

Thanks Slo, long but well worth watching.

So thanks a lot lads. I really appreciate your help.

Now can I put all of that into practice?    Confused

I have downloaded a couple of vibration meters and they work a treat.

I have balanced one motor and the difference is quite marked.

Slow painstaking work but I suspect well worth it.   Wink

Howdy Lads,

Found this rubber in the local hardware store (Bunnings) this morning.

I have made pads to go under the motor pylons and behind the motors.

I am just in the process of measuring the vibration levels with and without the pads and various screw tensions.

I feel that the little pips give some added isolation.

I will post the results later but so far so good. Looks very promising. [Image: smile.png]

Obviously not for Amazon Prime... Otherwise he wouldn't be using 'Slow Fly' props!
