Hacking skyzone goggles
#1
Hi everyone,
My Skyzone SKY01 32ch. DD receiver  goggles are loosing the ability to receive signal after only a short distance now. I am wondering if a DD receiver can be hacked into them somehow.

I cannot find a schematic for them online and sending them to Foxtech for repair seems cost prohibitive.

Before anyone asks...I have been through ALL the simple things that can be wrong and have narrowed it down to what has to be the receivers.

Thanks in advance,

Cue

You can buy the RX5808 receiver separately, but it sounds unlikely that both receivers have failed at the same time.

That would point to something else being wrong. My first thought would be that you should check the input voltage to the receivers. Maybe the regulator that powers them has become weak.

Hello unseen,
Thanks for responding. Can you tell me if I post up images of the board inside the goggles where the power plugs in if you could spot where that regulator might be?
I'm not an electronics guy and have no knowledge of where that might be. Also and of course, I cannot procure schematics for the goggles.

I'm thinking that makes sense because at times I have to plug and unplug the power several times to get the screen to clear. What I mean is that sometimes when I plug in (the power) the screen rolls like an old TV might do right before you had to pound on it to make it stop.

That really does sound like a power issue.

If you can put up some high resolution pictures with sharp focus, I might at least be able to suggest where you should check the voltage.

Also, before you open up the goggles, you might like to try cleaning the power plug and socket with some alcohol. Make sure you get inside the barrel of the plug and socket with some kitchen paper and a toothpick or similar so that you clean both sets of contacts. It wouldn't be the first time that a dirty connector has caused strange, intermittent problems.

Also on the right side, the goggles have gotten fairly warm a few times. Not burning hot but enough that I noticed it.

On the right hand board in your pictures is a switched mode voltage regulator. There's also what looks like five pads which might be useful for testing.

Can you take some closer pictures of both sides of that board?

The black chip above the part with 4R7 written on it I believe. I may be wrong however.

I'm afraid this is getting way beyond my capabilities...

Ah, OK. What looked like five pads were actually five ceramic capacitors. The light and the angle got me confused.

As expected though, there's the receiver module on the other side of the board.

The receiver looks like this underneath:

As you can see, one of the pins is marked +5V. With this picture, you should be able to work out which of these pins is the +5V pin on your goggles.

Connect all the boards and cables back together - it's important that everything is connected - and measure the 5V line at the receiver.

I assume that there are two boards, both with receivers. Do both of them have the same voltage regulator circuitry or just one of them?

That is indeed the switched mode regulator chip. The part with 4R7 written on it is an inductor which is also part of the regulator circuitry.
