H8 mini board/PQ frame and 7mms - drifting roll
#1
Update/fix posted in replys.

Just finished the quick lil build. Nothing fancy, still stock tx and stock props, just changed frame to Picnic Quads Efficiency X 80 poly frame and 0720 motors.
Things went bad on maiden. Quad behaves as if Im holding my roll trim button to the right. I can compensate with stick input, until i run out of stick lol. Then when I center my stick it rolls right even more.

There are some added oscillations but motors and props seem ok. (motors are slightly used btw) Can this be done without flashing firmware and adjusting PIDs (thought it would at least be flyable lol)
Only other difference is I changed the board mounted losi plug to a pigtail losi.
Board is mounted with foam tape.

Edit: after singling out each motor and prop I noticed some really bad harmonic vibration coming from 2 motors. Tried to make a couple new (h8) props to fit, but I think I just need to get some props made for 1mm shafts.

Any advice tips tricks lemme know please.
Thx for looking!

I'd be very surprised if replacing props fixed your issue! I have to ask, have you reset the gyro's, I think its - hold both control stick to lower right or both to lower left? lights flash briefly to confirm something has happened..?

check motor shafts for any hair or carpet fiber?

Make sure that the board is mounted level, that the quad is level when you bind, I think the gyro resets when you power on/bind so maybe it wasn't on a flat surface? Not too sure if its just the camera angle but it looks as though the motors on the right of the pic look like they are mounted lower making the quad un-level..?

Otherwise bud, I'm afraid I'm stumped!

Yeah reset gyro several, several times. Thats whats weird, after it drifts off I can land and start the process all over again, WITHOUT resetting gyros, take off level, and slowly roll more and more to the right once again.  Thinking Huh Sad Confused Dodgy Angry Poop Whistling
Motors and props are all level. (even tried @ different heights to change COG and stability of motors)
Board is level and centered well.

Ordered some hubsan props for 2$ so no biggie if they dont work.
Next would be to try some new motors vs these used ones I had laying around.

Tyvm for the reply tom!
It has got me scratching my head too Thinking

Here is a video of its behavior. Before new motors and frame it would have just sit there warming up motors like a good lil quad. It must be becoming a teenager  ROFL

Lol, I wonder, is that the drone version of twerking!?
I reckon if it was becoming a teenager, when you pushed up on the stick, it would have turned round and said "Why are you always hassling me, can't you see I'm busy on my phone, it's so bloody UN-FAIR!" before stomping off to its room!

No luck. Vibrations are much less and still drifting off. Could the frame be the issue? I @ a freakin loss here

Haibo! Minangaas! Zulu for - Oh no! I don't know!

I just received my spare props for my H8, realized I was missing a few tiny screws and used them in the OUTER-most holes to hold the motors. I forgot that the board is held by the INNER-most holes, this made the quad NUTS! it was very noisy and sort of flyable, but if you did any hard maneuvering it would flip over and over really fast and crash. Putting screws in the right holes(!) to hold the board fixed this totally.

Lmao Wink
I had put a small thought into that. Because all stock, frame is flexable and board is hard mounted. How i have it now is on a more rigid frame with the board mounted with foam tape. Hmmm

Any thoughts or suggestions would be highly appreciated! Maybe we can think of a different way to mount. Hot glue maybe idk.
Thanks everyone!

I mounted a board on blobs of hot glue to keep from shorting on CF frame, I let the glue go cold and just used them for insulation, I mounted the board with a rubber band, it worked ok-ish... I think the main issue was the props, because the same frame and H8 board worked fine with actual 8.5x20mm motors (not the 8.5x15mm from BG with ridiculously heavy props) and Ladybird props.

However after installing silvexxx firmware on both my H8 boards, both seem to have developed the same issue, rolling back and pitching to the right, flying level mode I reach a point where I have no stick authority left to correct the roll. Flying acro is better as you can just keep nudging forward/left to correct, but as I have no experience with flying acro I spend more time getting used to correcting it's roll/pitch than managing to get the hang of actually flying acro mode!

Have you flashed silvexxx to the board your having problems with or is it still stock firmware?

Mine is all stock firmware. This was the first step haha.
I have an h8 3d coming. Its a slightly bigger frame w/ 7mm motors. Going to see what happens when i move the regular h8 board w/ 7mms into this new frame.
Imo its got to be a vibration problem interfering with the gyro loop.

UPDATE!

So after playing around with my new H8 3D for a few days (fun, but it has its quirks. I personally like the regular H8 Mini better) I finally got around to switching the H8 mini board and 0720 motors over to the 3D frame. Everything went very well!

Out with the old, in with the new!

Board is a perfect fit but motors are 5mm taller than the 3D's (0715s)

I simply cut out the top of the motor holder on upper shell
[Image: tabImo2l.jpg]

Motors fit great! Nice and snug.

Made some very small reliefs on the arms to the upper shell to fit wires (I use these too much to cut short) as well as the mini losi plug. looks Cool imo lol
[Image: BDJ6VB6l.jpg]

Installed the Hubsan X4 props and she flys butter smooth and quiet! (some wobble when yaw comes to a stop but minimal)
Imho this is a great frame for an H8 Mini running 7mm motors!

AUW is 27.6g using the 230mah 1s lipo that comes with the H8 3D. Haven't timed any flights yet.

So in conclusion I think the drifting problem was caused by vibrations getting to the FC board. No good on a Picnic Quads Poly frame lol[Image: YCjh4aZl.jpg]
