Greetings IntoFPV from Long Island, NY
#1
Greetings guys!

I'm joining this group to get some "insider" knowledge on quads and FPV set-up and configuration. I'm hoping you guys can help with my questions - will post in relevant forum.  I have been in the R/C hobby since roughly 1969 when proportional radio was just coming into its own.  I spent many years with my father flying pattern & scale, slope soaring, quarter scale, and some heli's to boot.  I put my 35% Sukhoi in moth balls back in 2009 and did the soccer dad thing for a few years.  The great thing about this hobby is that it continues to evolve - give it a few years and there's something new to try!  So now I'm trying FPV quad's, and the great thing is I can practice in my back yard!  very cool.  My corral includes an Inductrix (indoors for rainy days), Diatone GT2 200, and a Phantom 4.  Using Spexman SP2 goggles.

The tough part of being on Long Island is finding a place to fly.  Unfortunately, RC aero-modelers have not been welcomed in many parks - just the opposite, my club of the past 20 years just lost their field.  If there are any LI folks reading this and have a flying site, please drop me a note.

Thanks,
Doug

Hey Doug, welcome to the forum, sorry to hear about your club loosing their field, I just checked the user map and was surprised to see how empty NY state is!? There is an app called drone zones which shows flying spots, maybe there are some near you? Anyway, I am sure that you will find the forum a great place to hang out and get advice, this site is full of really helpful and incredibly knowledgeable people, I hope you enjoy your time with us!

Hey Doug, welcome to IntoFPV! It's always nice to meet people whom have been flying RCs for a long time. At the RC park that I fly at it's mostly fixed wing guys but there are a few who have just got started into FPV quads like you that seem to be doing really well and catching on pretty quick! I'll have to work to keep up otherwise pretty soon they'll be giving me pointers lol.

A quick look on the app that Tom mentions above (DroneZones) there is Brookwood Hall Park that's got a rating and the person called public safety for permission and must have got it, Oak Beach which the person who submitted it rated it all 5s, and Eisenhower park which in one picture has a full scale heli in it! lol... Not that I have done all the typical research that I would do before flying one of the locations on DZ (like checking FAA regulations for airports and local park rules etc) but I share to point out that DZ really is a great app that might help you do some searching for a spot! I really like it myself.

Welcome Doug! I'm in Finger Lakes region myself - lot's of space up here, but it's still sometimes difficult to find a welcoming spot to fly. If you aren't afraid of concrete, you might look into getting access to parking garages during off-hours. I'm guessing there probably a few "underground" drone clubs around.

Anyway, good to have you on intoFPV!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes! I downloaded the "Drone Zones" app - it looks useful. Appreciate you passing that along.
