Hey Everyone,
So I know most of you are using the Taranis transmitter as it's one of the best radios on the market for rc flying. For those of you who are either on a budget, want to try something different or need a backup tx, the 9xr/9xr-pro is a great alternative. There are some minor flaws with the build quality and some things I wish were included but nothing that can't be fixed or added (sliders, more 3 pos switches etc.). For the price its a great setup, I got mine for $54 new but I think it's around $70 right now. My only main concern with the 9xr-pro that I was using was the quality of the gimbal controls. 1, they started off nice and smooth but soon after felt very rough and basically seemed like the bearings were degrading with each use. 2, I had some serious wandering yaw problems as the spring controlling the rudder control was of poor quality and wouldn't settle back to midpoint after each control input. 3, the actual range of motion the stock gimbals have is very limited so it makes it harder to make smooth minor corrections in flight. The solution, the frsky pr10 gimbals. These are the same gimbals used in the Frsky lineup of transmitters and a big part of why they are the most favoured transmitter on the market. I saw a couple of videos on youtube of the mod for the 9xr to install these gimbals and rather than spending another $400cdn on a new transmitter I figured its worth $25 to try and upgrade/fix my existing setup. It was pretty straight forward, clip the corner tabs and use the inner set of holes to mount. You do need to grind out the holes so they line up and either use longer screws or grind down the plastic a few mm's so the original screws fit. The wires order needs to be swapped around but they come with the same connectors so it was a fairly easy install. The frsky gimbals are so smooth its almost ridiculous to think at one point I thought the 9xr stock gimbals were good. The range of motion is about 30% more than stock and the quality of the internal parts such as the spring and bearings has rid my annoying problem of a constant slow yaw. All in all this was by far the best upgrade mod I have done so far to this transmitter as its brought new life to the radio and also helped improve my flying. Even with the frsky tx module, upgraded antenna and now the gimbals, I'm still at about half of what the Taranis plus costs new and have all the same benefits of a high end system. Sorry I couldn't add more photos as I'm having some issues trying to upload the pics I took. I will update with pics shortly of the steps I took or possibly just make a quick video for anyone interested in doing this modification.
These are the frsky pr-10 gimbals I used:

(There are lots of sources for these gimbals, just look for frsky replacement gimbal pr-10. Same goes for the parts I've listed below if you don't like HK)
I'm using the Frsky DJT telemetry module from Hobby King:

The XJT is a little better as it allows the use of the s-bus x series receivers w/telelemtry but obviously more expensive:

This is the best 2.4g antenna I've used so far for this setup, 7db no issues whatsoever with range or blind spots:

I've been using the very popular D4R-ii rx, I actually 5 of them at the moment and am very happy with the size and range for my 180's/210's and 250's:

If it isn't broke, fix it anyways!
