Flying in Europe with lipo's
#1
I'm sure everybody knows Oscar's useful blog on this topic: https://oscarliang.com/travelling-mini-q...batteries/

I'm due to fly to Hungary from the UK, via WizzAir, tomorrow, so have been checking the regulations more closely.

Has anyone flown with WizzAir with their lipos?

They're FAQ suggests a maximum of two lipo's per person or am I reading it wrong :/

If the battery is under 100Wh, there is no limit on how many you can have in your carry on luggage. A 1500mah 4s is 1.5ah x 14.4V = 21.6Wh so well below the 100Wh mark

Many thanks, that's pretty much the conclusion I've got to now although I did call the airline too with little success.

I can just imagine my wife's patience as I get carted off to some dark room for a closer inspection Wink

You can print this document and keep it in your bag in case the security at the airport has some doubts:

Just coming from some recent experience of flying with lipo's, all I can say (apart from the stuff in Oscar's post & what has already been said) is that you should take the lipo's out of your carry-on and into a seperate tray before scanning, and make sure they are all cleanly taped up and labelled.

All it means is that for the officers, you seem more professional, it takes less time, and they need to ask less questions.

Good luck with your flying!

i'd add to that, keeping them in separate bag will save you a lot of time...
you will not be held as a guy with strange materials and cables pointing out of it (imagine if you are looking in the x-ray machine and see 9 blocks with cables next to eachother...)
also if you are selected for the "random" check your main bag might be left alone and only the "suspicious" package will be checked
secondly be kind to the guys /girls at the airport... first time i've flown with lipos i was like "i have answer to every question, im prepared" and the guy on the other side of the table "baterries, quadcopter... ok move along" and i was like "but but but i have answers..."
All the best

Do I understand correctly that some of you have taken more than 2 lipos with you in the airplane cabin? Also after April 1st of this year (2016)? My reading all points me to the conclusion that you can only bring 2 lipos with you..

See the International Air Transport Association (IATA)'s page: http://www.iata.org/publications/tracker...pdate.aspx. The PDF posted above seems legit and it may fool an airport personnel but it displays "Printed in Canada 02/2010" in small letters, which makes me wary. A lot's changed in hobby electronics since 2010 and the rules must have changed since then.

This page also seemed clear but the article was last updated 2014-10-27 so will probably be outdated: http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/artic...ies_by_air. If the rules have changed since 2014 you can bet they probably haven't become more lenient.

Yes, I just took 6 4s, 5 1S, one Fatshark and 3 18650 batteries with me from Norway to south Korea, no questions asked

Recently i went from Poland to Greece, had with me over 7 Lipos - 4s ranging from 1300 - 1800 mah.
i've had them in separate bag - aka lipo safe, i've had few documents printed out - i was ready...
how much disappointment when i've placed my lipos in a bag on the conveyor belt for the xray machine, having alll the answers ready... and nobody asked a question.....

on my way back i've seen some additional rules that the power leads should be secured by electrical tape, again none was checking this...

so, be kind(they are doing their jobs), prepare them in separate bag (this way if anything is questioned majority of your bag will not be again searched, and you limit their work to only lipo bag ), be few minutes earlier "if someone will have some questions".

traveling with lipo is safe as long as the cabin is warm and pressurized Wink
