Flybot MiniRaceWing: the test by Ozcopter

The wing FPV, already very present on the American continent, come to us. Manufacturers saw the flowering which usually offer us a structure entirely made of EPP / EPO.
The fixed wing and especially the wings are my thing, I prefer this type of theft that gives me more freedom and excitement that the quad, but it's a matter of taste.
I discovered this MiniRaceWing project on kickstarter, I immediately liked this possibility to easily test different configurations and to test other profiles (for those with access to a hot wire to cut his own wings).
The downside is that this kind of wings will not be accepted in competition, if based on the same rules as USA / Canada, because of the carbon structure.
Kit Contents

Configuration
I chose, at first, to follow the configuration recommended by the designer at the drive unit. According to them, this config is capable of reaching 200 km / h.
  • Engine: T-Motor - F80 2500KV

  • ESC: 60A (BlueSeries home HobbyKing)

  • Propeller: Graupner - CAM Speed Prop 5.5 x 5.5

  • Servos: Corona 929mg

  • fpv Camera: Runcam Eagle

  • HD Camera: 2 Runcam

  • Video Transmitter: Eachine

  • LiPo: 1800mAh 4S
As with all my wings, I put an OSD with GPS (see tutorial here).
Mounting
For this step I refer to the manual is very well done. No difficulties were encountered and all amounts in 2 evenings taking his time.
I would recommend buying a T10 Torx driver (available on the website or in flybot bricomachin).
All collages are made with cyano, consider passing a sandpaper blow on carbon and on the front epo sticking.
I used paper laminating film (found at Lidl) applied with iron, for various reinforcements (page 14). It is solid, rigid and strong it sticks). But other reinforced tape will do.
Almost all of the electronics are housed in the fuselage, ESC, although big just returned, it is placed just in front. Only the GPS is for obvious reasons outside.

I placed the VTX on the side, to see if it will withstand the possible crashes, but I had to cut out some material for the housing.

First flight
After a quick check of the direction of travel, I get the wing leading edge, pushes the gas about 2/3 and launches the wing in his element.
It starts slightly to the right, I take the altitude, trim a few shots and it's good.
My first feeling is that it is stable and it's like guided by a rail, despite the wind it makes very little heckling.
Small stressful time, my video back is catastrophic, I'm in the middle of the field ... but where my GPS does not give me any info (GPS has stalled in flight, for the video back the worries came from my new firmware Vrx). I'm turning around, trying to make dens on this spot I do not know, while having an image of very poor quality. Luckily the engine sound brings me back to me.
After this long time alone, I go down the throttle stick, wow, she agreed to fly very slowly, I move low to the ground, at low speed, it is really healthy. Other wings like the well-known Z-84 would have stalled.
With this propeller 5 × 5 flight did not seem so fast, it quickly good flight but I was expecting more.
Brief for the first flight, I am impressed with this wing is not vicious for a sub, limit a beginner, having already flown with another plane for the foundation, could fly without being afraid, even if it is able to fly fast. Furthermore there is no reason to put a nicer config as proposed Flybot on its website.

The crash test
Yeah, had to try, I must admit that I have not made a violent crash, but I still hit the earth at great speed ... The fuse system does its job and aside from a propeller traces the edge trailing the wing, nothing was damaged.
The following flights
After another fluorescent covering the wing, I go make another flight with a propeller Graupner 5.5 × 5.5. It already grows. I still have that feeling rail despite the strong wind. I gave a little more deflections than advocating the record and I like it even more because more vivid.
It is very accurate in control, the engine gives a very good compromise weight / power.
In short I regret having cut short my last flight for the esc did not want to answer, if I had gone to empty all lipo afternoon.

What I liked :

What I liked least:
  • Fixing of winglets, I'm afraid it grows old and evil causes flutter, but for now it holds very well. At worst we find this material in bricomachin and it's pretty simple to redo or simply an opening and nut paste.

I will return soon with a video of a full flight with velocity measurements and shaking the beast.
