First FPV recommendations
#1
(Feel free to relocate the post if it's in the wrong area).

I am wanting to get into FPV but I don't know what I should get. I have some experience with a 'traditional' bigger, photographic quadcopter. I've also flew it via the camera a few times, but at altitude. Never flown a smaller one

I've been looking at the MJX Bugs 3 Mini (would you recommend it?). I do have a smaller budget which tops out about $500 AUD. I would also prefer to have one that is ready to fly or near teady to fly, and I would rather not build one for my first.

I have no real idea where to start.

So many options mate!

I wouldn't discount building one right away, it comes in very handy when you inevitably have a crash an need to repair it.

Something like the tyro 99 or 109 is a very good place to start purely because its super cheap for what you get so if you destroy it it's not so heartbreaking. Diatone also makes a lot of good options.

Is your budget for everything or just the quad?

Trasnmitter: Taranis Q X7: 153.70 AUD + about 20.0 batt's

Simulator (if wanted): Velocidrone, DRL, Liftoff:  $29 AUD

3 inch BNF Quad: Leader 3 = $200 AUD, Diatone GT R349 = $203 AUD

5-inch BNF: EMax Hawk = $362.5 AUD

Goggles: Box-style: Eachine EV800D = $145 AUD, "Compact Style": Aomway Commander V1 = $435 AUD
you can get better goggles than these but for a higher cost

Hope this helps as a start!
All the Best,

If you are interested in stepping into the world of FPV, here is my generic advice:

Step 1: Get a Radio, Fly a Simulator
The first step is to buy a quality radio. Pilots who are used to video game controllers might like a FrSky X-Lite while others may prefer the FrSky Taranis Q X7. While FrSky radios are the most popular, there are also other great options like the FlySky Nirvana or controllers made by Futaba and Spektrum. Once you have a radio, connect it to your computer and practice flying in an FPV flight simulator. If you opt for the QX7, be aware that many new pilots assume it comes with a battery or a way to use AA batteries however it does not. You will need to purchase a separate battery for either of these FrSky radios.

Step 2: Find Pilots Near You

Search Facebook, YouTube, and MultiGP to find other pilots in your area. Sometimes having someone local is the best resource for getting help when you need it. They can also point out safe spots to fly and might be willing to meet up for group events.

Step 3: Education

While you are training yourself playing around in the sims, watch every video you can by Joshua BardwellUAVFuturesMr. Steel's How To FPV Playlist, and others on YouTube. You will learn a ton. Perhaps even join some of the Kwad Camp twitch streamsFPV related Discord channels, or FPV subreddits ( r/Multicopter r/fpv  r/multicopterbuilds r/fpvracing ), and ask questions.

Step 4: Buy or Build Your First Drone

Some people decide that buying a Whoop class drone is the best way to get started, others prefer to jump right in to the 5" class and build their own. Definitely check out Bardwells FPV Shopping List if you are going to build your own. Lots of good info in there. Also knowing how to solder is very important when building or repairing your drone. Get a good soldering iron, watch some tutorials, and practice before the iron ever touches your drone. The last thing you want is a solder joint failing while your drone is zipping across the sky at top speed.

Step 5: Goggles

To truly fly FPV, you are going to need a screen. Most pilots will opt for a goggle of some sort. If you are just starting out, get some relatively inexpensive box goggles. The eachine EV800D seems to get good reviews. If you outgrow them and you want to upgrade, they make great passenger goggles to bring friends and family along for a ride, which is also a great way to spread the hobby and get others interested.

Step 6: Enjoy!
I know it may seem daunting and there is a lot to learn, but it is fun and well worth the effort.

Also what I did was by a kit from helipal that also came with a transmitter for roughly 300$ but doesn't include batts, charger or props. (also it would better to get a better then half decent transmitter cos the t8fb that comes with some of the models has only got like 800m range. Aomway v1 were my choice and vid is fine

Here is my 2 cents worth, met a guy while walking my pugs at the park He was flying drone fpv. He let my grandson copilot, gave him the biggest smile I've seen on him in a long time. So I looked in to them. I built 1 flew a little wow built a bigger 1, then x frame, smaller 1. Now I am at 7 custom built 3 dji and had my thumb amputated and reattached so flying is pretty hard. I just bought a tiny whoop. My point, I really like building them even more than flying and it helped me learn about flying. The group of people here have been great with there help and support.

I wouldn't go the MJX Bugs 3 Mini. Way too much stuff hanging off it to break.

I went a slightly more expensive way when I started 6 months ago. I got the Blade Inductrix Brushless. Great drone but under 2 minutes flight time if you gave it a bit. If I had it all over again I would do it this way.

Note: I fly predominately outside.

Quad is an Eachine M80 or get something similar. It used to come in Frysky mode which I would probably go for as less online support for Spektrum plus you can get a cheaper but just as good FrySky radio. Parts are really cheap and any 40mm with a 1mm center hole prop fits. I've had to have gone through at least 50.

This is Rasputin flying. It is glitching a lot and looses power now and again BUT this little guy has had about 7 frames replaced and at least a Billion Smile props replaced.

Also and this is a pretty big one don't go brushless for your first FPV quad as you wont get the flight times you need for learning. Also go Acro mode asap. I went to a football field, sat in the middle and crashed a lot until I got it under control.

Goggles Eachine EV800D

Once you have the FPV in Acro mode thing down to a reasonable skill then go the Mini Quad. They are scary in a good way so I would highly recommend go a Micro first. Heaps cheaper parts and far less damage each crash as basically you are going a lot slower and so much easier to fix.

I bought the Eachine Tyro 109 when I figured I was readyish to fly one. Only just got it and it's so fast it is taking me a bit to get used to the speed. I reckon it will take me about another 2 weeks before I am flying low around things..

Also whatever you get make sure parts are readily available and cheap and buy lots of spare frames and props when you first buy it as you are going to break it a lot Smile

Hope this helps in your journey.
