First Build! Martian II 6"
#1
After many months of research and saving for parts, I have finally completed my first race quad. I am quite bad at flying and am still quite scared to try acre mode as I do not want to destroy this so soon after completing it. (That and I don't have the funds to rebuild any of it)

This picture was taken before I got my IntoFPV battery straps and a hd recording camera.

Thanks for all the help you all have given me on my way to completing this quad!

Nice job xtopher.  What is the AUW?  I understand the limited budget.  While you're learning, try and fly over grassy areas.  Understand that you WILL crash....a lot.  It's part of the learning process.  Self leveling is good, but try not to utilize it for too long and consider making the move to acro as soon as you think you're ready.  I started in self level and I had a really hard time making the move because I waited too long.  It will be awkard at first, but in the end it will feel more natural, let alone the fact that you'll have much better control over the machine.

As long as you're enjoting yourself, that's all that really matters.  Take your time and move at your own pace.  When you get discouraged, just remember that we have all been right where you are now.  The key is practice, practice and oh yes....MORE practice. There are many many people on  this fourm that will be happy to help and don't hesitate to ask questions........the only stupid questions are the ones that don't get asked!   Above all believe in yourself and don't give up!! Big Grin Big Grin

On the Acro thing, if you're flying FPV I actually found Acro easier (as long as your rates aren't too high for you). Flying LOS I find it much easier to fly in Horizon (self level) mode even after nearly 5 months. Acro isn't that tough once you get into it. Good practice method I've found is find yourself an open flat spot, put your goggles on, take off, move forward, move backward, land. Do that 10 times. Then repeat it going side to side once you're comfortable. Then add in yaw spins next. Next is banked turns. Then flips! The key here is repetition though. Repeat something often enough and you'll start doing it without thinking about it, and that's when you're going to really benefit when flying fast through tight areas.

Great looking build.
2 things stand out to me.

1. the spinner prop nuts, they look cool, but I recommend you buy a set of nylon insert lock nuts. You will thank me for it later, trust me, you will lose the spinners. and nothing peeves you off more when out in the field and you lose a prop spinner nut. carry spares.

2. the hard mounted XT60 to the PDB..always check tightness between it and the lipo plug., I have several times had my XT60 pull apart in flight on my Armattan frames that have the fixed XT60 to the PDB. Also a mate of mine with his Alien 5 inch has had the same issue. Just food for thought.

I'm actually using King Kong props! I quite like them, though granted, I have nothing to compare them too XD

Since the picture was taken I also replaced those prop nuts with lock nuts and they are much better.

The XT60 on the PDB is one thing I don't really like about the Martian II frame but I'm not to worried as I am not doing anything crazy while I fly.

that's good that your using Kong blades, the reason why I asked is because you want durable props, and HQ although are good props, can't take a hit very well.

looks great! it took my a while to get used to flying acro, once you do you wont go back. Although I still fly in self leveling mode when Im flying LOS, I just have not had enough practice flying LOS with acro.

IMO its much easier to fly acro while FPV.

Looks good! I would like to build a 6" myself. Are you running the 6040 kingkongs?

I agree with biggles about the xt60 plug soldered to the PDB. It doesn't matter if you fly nice or hard, the plug will fall out. I have had that problem with every quad I have built with a xt60 soldered directly to the PDB. I have to have a screwdriver with me in the field and once in a while I have to widen the pins in the plug again. The only thing I can think of that can cause this is frame vibrations. Solder on a short pigtail, and the problem goes away.

Nice quad. I have that frame as a back up . I used it for quite a while until I had enough to buy my alien 5".
It's a decent frame .
I suggest just learning acro . Set your rates low to begin with .
Acro is much easier with the goggles. I can't even fly in a stabilized mode.. actually I don't have any stabilization modes currently.
It's best just to skip the stabilization modes.. you'll see Smile

Looks good! Post video of the flights.

I agree with the comment the spinner nuts. Those are expensive and easy to loose.

The XT60 PDB mounted, I really don't have an issue with - I have done that one several of my quads and it keeps the LiPo cable well managed. I do put a small zip-tie or two around the plug and a little glue or tape to keep them in place - it straightens the plug to survive crashes better.
The next build will be perfect! | Fleet and build info | YouTube Channel |

I added it as an attachment. How do I imbed it in the post?

Also very sad news. I tried a barrel roll and when I throttled back up nothing happened. I think my battery connector came disconnected. I snapped one of the arms clean off. And yet not a single prop broke! Oh well, I ordered a replacement.
