Filters on Multirotors.

Hi All  !

I couldn't find an answer elsewhere so hence my question here from a Newbie !

Does anyone use clip on soft ferrite rings to reduce interference on Multirotors ?

Sorry if this question has been answered elsewhere on the Forum !

Hi Yoda and welcome!

I've no experience so someone else will provide some proper info soon I'm sure. For now check out this thread  

I think ferrite rings are generally a bit heavy for RC, Unless there are some really tiny ones I don't know about? There are micro L/C filters, and some people have used a capacitor or 2 to good effect.

I guess your talking about interference on the VTX side of things?

Many thanks for your reply and link to thread.   Very deep for me technically but very interesting especially the last comment about 470uf 25v rubycon low esr caps.

I've copied an ebay link below to show the units I was thinking about trying but my main concern is additional weight on one of my 250 FPV Quads I fly.   These appear to weigh in at about 7grams each so not too bad I guess if they do the job well ?

Yes you are bang on with regard to VTX interference supression !   As we build smaller models the electronics all get crammed in which causes more interference noise risks !   A no win situation here Tom !

Another thing I've found helps is using pieces of USB cable for the vtx. Both power and to the camera. Requires some soldering but as USB cable is shielded, it blocks a lot of noise.

Hi there !

Thanks for this advice which I hadn't heard about !   I didn't know USB cables were screened and I guess it would work like screened audio cables like I use in my Recording Studio ?

My audio cables are 1/4 " thick and very heavy so your idea really sounds worth trying - THANKS !

I did watch a youtube video where the guy completely wrapped his VTX in aluminium foil and then soldered his audio lead to the foil to reduce noise ( if I remember correctly ! )    I had heard that the audio cable can give rise to some interference so this kind of made some sense although I haven't tried this yet.

If exposed cables could possibly cause interference ( especially all tightly crammed into a miniquad space ! ) wouldn't it make sense if the manufacturers were to individually screen them all or would this not be worth the effort ?

When I started, I was also very concerned about video noise and tried different methods. At the end of the day, I have found that the easiest solution that works for me is to use a good quality PDB to power the camera with 5V and the VTX with 12V, Rubycon 470uf low esr capacitors on the ESCs to reduce noise and twist the cables that came with the VTX/cam.
