Ok, I just ordered a Mobius Mini.

187 + 27 = 214 grams! Finally - an HD capable, sub-250 gram quad! If there's enough power for this setup, it's going to become my favorite, I'm sure :happy dance:

Built my smoke stopper and put it to the test with this new little critter.
I have a couple of questions:

Smoke stopper light comes on briefly as ESC's initialize, then light goes out - is this normal (this is my first time to use a smoke stopper)?

Don't smell anything, but I can't check everything out yet, because I realized that my OSD is connected (and hard to reach) so I can't do anything with Configurator until I disconnect Rx/Tx (anyway, that's what I read). And silly me, I didn't flash and configure the micro minimOSD before I installed it.  (I'll do all that in the next couple of days.)

Next question has to do with the OSD (I think):

Cam and VTx are working OK, but overlaid on the video is "ArduCam 2.0    -     Waiting for MAVLink heartbeats..." .  That's my MMOSD, correct?

(Only other problem I see is I can't get a bind with my Satellite - but I can sort that out myself.)
Thanks,
Scotty

At least I'll have a chance of "legally" getting some decent video now.  (That's "FAA legal" for those of you wondering.... Tongue )

So, I needed to flash and program my OSD so I disassembled the top plate, removed the OSD, flashed it, configured it, etc.

While I had it out, I decided to mod the RX/TX wires to include a jumper switch, so I could "turn off" the OSD (actually just make it not use UART1).  By removing the jumper, I could communicate with the FC using BetaFlight.

I reassembled, used smoke stopper to make sure I didn't introduce any new shorts.  I had my receiver bound, and checked the receiver tab for appropriate movement of all channels (all  OK). I removed smoke stopper and plugged in battery directly to test the OSD both "on" and "off" - it worked great!

So on to esc calibration and motor testing.  I unplugged the battery, removed the jumper, connected to Betaflight, did the calibration, and began testing the motors (had to do this without smoke stopper).

Everything seemed to be working fine - ran up each motor individually using the sliders in the motors tab (rotations OK).  Then I used the Master to run up all 4 motors at the same time.  Everything still appeared to work OK.  I decided to take the Master slider to near full throttle. Damn! - Smoke on #1!  Angry

The smoke appeared to come out of the motor first, but this photo shows the damage to the ESC, so I'm not sure.  I was too disappointed to disassemble for diagnosis yet, but I've already ordered 2 more motors and 2 more escs.  So I have a week to 10 days for diagnosis...  Not sure I'll be able to tell for certain, but I suspect I should have protected my motor wires better on the wrap around solder job I did.  I did check screw length, and like I said, it worked for awhile.

Tip of the day:  Buy 5 or 6 motors and 5 or 6 esc's for every build   Dodgy

Damn....that sucks Scotty.  I don't really see any evidence of damage on the motor so maybe it's ok.  I believe I would make a test stand with that motor (if it works ok) and a new esc and see if you can  max it out for 10 seconds or so.  It may have just been a fluke.  The reason I say that motor is that it's possible that  something in that particular motor caused an excessive load on the ESC.......good luck with it, it'll be interesting to hear what you find out. Sad

I got my new motors and ESC's and finally got back to repairing my build.  While I was testing the original build as I mentioned above, I saw smoke coming out of the connection between the ESC and the motor.  At the time, I thought it was the motor, but after looking more closely it looked like the results of a poor solder job on my part at the ESC.  It did work at first (enough to calibrate the ESC's and to run the motors up in the motor tab a few times),  but it must not have liked the heat or something.  I'm still not sure the motor is OK - I haven't tested it alone. I just decided to replace both instead.

I was very careful with my soldering this time.  I even removed some from the motor pads because the blobs were pretty big.  Anyway, got it together and started calibrating and testing again.  This time after calibrating, I decided to launch BLHeli to check the settings - good thing, because the new DYS 10A had a different version of BLHeli  (14.3 as opposed to 14.0 - wish I had checked those the first time).  I flashed all 4 to 14.6, recalibrated and checked again.  (One interesting thing was that PWM on all 4 matched exactly this time!  That never happened before.)

Anyway, tested motors with new settings and all was well.  So I put the propellers on (these are RotorX RX2535W props - not sure I'll stick with them but they look cool!), did a test hover in my office, and declared the build "Done"!  I haven't had time to take it outside and fly yet, but hope to sometime this week.  Here are the beauty shots:

190 grams is a bit heavier than I would have liked, and I still want to add my Mobius Mini, which with mount will take it to about 220.  Not sure the motors/props will like that, but I'm going to try.  Here's a dry fit shot:
