ExpressLRS 2.2.0 Firmware Now Available
#1
EDIT: A newer 2.3.0 release is now available. See another thread HERE for details.

The ExpressLRS 2.2.0 firmware was published earlier today. Full details are below. For details about what was in the previous 2.1.x release, see another thread HERE.

The important stuff
  • Arming state must be HIGH on AUX1 for safety and feature reasons.
  • This update is not required for most users, but contains minor bugfixes and new targets.
Enhancements

The ExpressLRS team would like to thank RadioMaster and the EdgeTX team for their support and collaboration on an internal ExpressLRS module. RadioMasters contribution of numerous prototypes and final product hardware for testing has resulted in the first fully featured and supported handset... the RadioMaster Zorro!

Thanks Snow, for keeping this current!
I am o 2.1.0 and love the Bluetooth connectivity for joystick and everything else.
I pay attention to ELRS and still find it hard to keep up.
I just hope that the rapid development does not scare off any new prospective users.
I am still on the original Happymodel TX2.4 JRbay module not the pro. it takes all the current firmware and works great. I did do a fan mod.

It's great for the community that we have lots of active development on some of these projects but I'm not a big fan of things that move quite so fast because the chance of bugs and issues creeping in which slip through the net with such frequent releases is much higher, especially for some of the edge cases. There are also so many different manufacturers of the ELRS hardware now that testing every combination of hardware for all possible scenarios is virtually impossible in the limited time periods that we are seeing between releases, so things probably don't get tested thoroughly enough which then leaves users to be the beta testers. New releases of critical RC link firmware every couple of weeks that may be lacking some testing makes me somewhat nervous and I myself would feel more comfortable jumping into ELRS when I start to see some of these releases slow down a bit. The same goes for EdgeTX which is another firmware which forms part of your critical RC link. They too also seem to be putting out a new release nearly every month.

As time goes on and firmware matures, the frequency of releases should start to slow down just like it has with a lot of the other established firmware. Putting bug fixes aside, there are only so many new features and enhancements you can put into a firmware to make it truly useful before you then risk just making it bloatware with way too much functionality and too many complex options that most people just won't ever use. So it will be interesting to see when new releases of both ELRS and EdgeTX start slowing down to a more manageable pace. We do need active firmware development to prevent things stagnating, but new releases needs to be at a sensible pace IMO.

If you take a look at all the other established firmwares out there, Betaflight included, we are generally getting new minor firmware releases maybe every quarter and major firmware releases every 6 or 12 months which is much more manageable to keeping on top of.

Most of the updates are to add new targets and bug fixes for new features, not to the core functionality. Most users have no reason to update every minor release unless they are running brand new hardware that requires it. From the very first section of the release notes: "This update is not required for most users, but contains minor bugfixes and new targets."

So, no reason to fear the active development. If anything, it's a great sign that there are plenty of developers testing and able to quickly fix any issues that are discovered.

I went from 1.1 to 2.1 with no RC's in between. And only went to 2 because I wanted Bluetooth Joystick !!! and boy does that work good on the sims. And the 2. Lua scripts are pretty good too. So, I have only updated a few times and that was for features I wanted.
I am on the original HappyModel stuff. It has been rock solid for me.

The active development is great. And we have a huge pool of "beta testers" as Snow would (rightly) call them Smile So the bug fixing may get done faster. I don't mind waiting for a full release. If I need it.

Its like 6am. I spent all night trying to upgrade and flash.

Passthru didnt work with receivers, and I was pulling hair out trying to get WIFI flashing, until I finally realized receiver must be VERY close right next to computer.

Likewise, must have tried 20x to flash the TX. Tried 3 cables. What the hell is going on.
Finally it worked! The USB cable was rubbing against housing - it hadn't fully clicked in.
