Ethix Mr Steele stout and silk
#1
I own five different sets of the Mr Steele stout V4 motors and it’s odd that one crash made the bearings sound bad so I replaced them. One set of motors have had some crashes that scratched up the bells so I ordered a couple of sets of red and white but I also received a set of black bells that are for the silk motors. I test fit it on the stout motor and it looks like the identical size and shaft but is that ok? I didn’t want to crash my quad because of stupidity ?

I will also suggest you double check the stator height and air gap between the magnets and the stator to be sure they are similar.

These measurements are fairly subtle but can have a major impact on desyncs etc.

100% Yeah I’m probably asking for trouble anyways. I did notice the magnets are apparently different according to the specs. Here is the info…

While the pants remain interchangeable with V1/V2, the V3 stator and bell is only compatible with other V3 models. You can swap SILK N48 magnet bells out for STOUT N52 magnet bells (added power and response). But since we went with a thicker shaft, these will NOT be compatible with previous generation Steele motor parts. This is a bummer, but to innovate sometimes you have to change.

These motors are offered in:

SILK – 2306 2345KV N48 magnets recommended but not limited to 4/5S 5” freestyle mini quads.

STOUT – 2306 1750KV N52 magnets recommended for but not limited to 6S 5” freestyle mini quad setups.

So the bells are different.

The higher the number the stronger the magnetic strength. N52 will be stronger than N48. This will not only affect the motor feel (notchy vs smooth) but may also affect performance in a good or bad way depending on how you look at it from an aggressive vs smooth motors perspective.

I’m just gonna return them. My only complaint is these Stout v4 motors are fragile. I hit the right arm on a tree limb and the motor started to sound wounded so I swapped the bell and realized it’s the bearings.

Unfortunately with Mr Steele motors you pay a premium the the name on them, not for quality. I've heard more than one report of people being unimpressed with them for the money you pay.

I have seen a lot of complaints about Steele brand motors.
Bearings go out fast and bent bells from minor tumbles.
I can understand a bad batch but it’s not uncommon to see pilots complaining about how bad Steele motors are.

Seriously ! I hit a small branch and that motor started making noise and I got an odd wobble. Replaced the motor and two flights later the Speedybee 45a esc died at one hundred feet up. One motor was completely smoked and the other three sound horrible now. Speedybee went back and forth with me and now they are replacing the esc and gave me 50% off of a new RunCam Orange that got destroyed. I won’t run that esc again but I swear I could look at one of the motors wrong and something will bend or start making a bearings noise. Hopefully the botgrinder motors hold up better then these.

I never thought I would agree that t-motors makes the best motors but after using several sets and models of them I see why so many pilots pay the extra expensive for them.
There’s also Emax Eco 2 and iflight zing2 are good motors with good reviews on YouTube.
For the money it’s hard to beat Emax Eco 2.

I had the eco 2’s on another apex and had a failsafe on a mountain top killing two of them. I did get the Botgrinder v4’s and they have been great. They are $20 each and have been really quiet so far. I haven’t crashed them yet either so we will see.
