ESC question
#1
Morning Folks....

I am working on a new build and I needed to de-soldered the power leads for the ESC's in order to make placing the wiring easier.  In doing so, I have accidentally caused a solder bridge between two adjacent capacitors which are next to the pad for the lead I was removing.

I have tried wicking the solder away, sucking it away, etc. and have had no luck.  I suspect my iron is not getting hot enough to completely fluidize the factory solder due to the higher silver content.

I checked one of the ESC's I had not done anything to yet with a multi-meter and I show continuity between the same two capacitors (which are not bridged with solder).  That would indicated to me that these two capacitors are connected electrically anyway, so it shouldn't make a difference anyway?  Thoughts/suggestions?   Thinking

I'm no expert, but i believe these capacitors act as filters and they mostly work in parallel with one side connected to ground, so this shouldn't be an issue.

I don't have an answer with regards to your continuity question, but the bridge is easy to solve with some liquid flux.

Add a small drop of liquid flux to the bridge + bridged components. With a hot soldering iron, drag your soldering tip from the one component to the other. Basically "crossing the bridge". The solder should separate and stick to the components only, removing the bridge.

I bridge things often, and this method works every time.

You can get the flux in pencils, really handy for clean soldering jobs.

Hi Guys....

I kind of neglected this tread by not posting the out come...sorry.  Everything seemed to be fine when I got it installed and powered up (no smoke).  I didn't have the flux I needed at the time and I was of course in a hurry and since the modified ESC checked out electrically the same as the one I bridged I decided to chance it.  It worked fine and I have not had a problem since.  Thanks for all the responses in spite of my poor forum educate. Sad

I am late to the game, but if you get continuity between caps, then they are connected and solder bridge doesn't matter.
