ESC/Motor Beacon for lost model alarm?
#1
I know we can manipulate the settings in BLheli for an esc beacon, for lost model alarms, but is there a way to put the esc sound on a taranis switch?

It's planned for future version of Betaflight using DSHOT. Currently not possible.

However for now, you can change your beacon delay in Blheli from 10 minutes to four or five? Your esc will chirp. You can also change the beep strength .Most flights are 3 or four minutes and you wont have to wait long for it to chirp. It's not exactly a beeper but it works. I think you have to be careful on how strong you set the strength. rc groups had a thread on it.

It's important to remember that the noise is made by the motors, not by the ESC.

If you set the strength too high, you'll overheat the motors fairly quickly.

For some reason, this question has never occurred to me till now:  What is the electrical process that causes a brushless motor to emit sound?  Thinking

EDIT: Just did a little research - found this.

If you hit the windings with the right frequency, you actually make the entire bell move enough to make sound. That's why the motors often twitch a little when they beep.

It's just like a loudspeaker effectively.

Just noticed there's an actual feature request on github to implement this.
https://github.com/betaflight/betaflight/issues/3061

So far:
  • blheli does not yet support the dshot beeper command at all
  • kiss 24a do support the beeper command but it can only be sent via betaflight CLI, so no practical use yet Sad
