Eachine Chinese Whoop - antenna mod + better battery
#1
Hey guys, I finally jumped into the Whoop stuff. At the beginning I was disappointed with 30 seconds flight time on stock. Changed motors to "upgrade banggood whatever" but that didn't help with time, just got me a decent first punchout. Finally my "upgrade eachine 45C packs" arrived and... SUCCESS! It's a blast right now Big Grin

In simple words - stock battery is TOTAL CRAP!

And my antenna mod. You really don't need a dedicated "antenna". A 13mm piece of wire is enough for indoor flying Smile

What VTX are you using?

Love the antenna, must save a gram or 2? I'm pretty sure that those batteries are the ones for the E010c, y'know the ready whooped one. Surprised and confused how the 'same 150mAh capacity' at a higher discharge rate = longer flights!? Surely a higher discharge rate means the battery discharges faster, making for faster speeds but shorter flights?
Konrad, I don't s'pose you have a meter to measure the current used when charging, it would be interesting to see exactly how many mA go into the different batteries?

Have you tried the upgraded batteries with the stock motors? From what I hear, the same stock motors will be used on the E010c, just interested to get an idea of how it will perform, some believe it won't even fly...

It does always seem, at least with the stock 150mAh's on my H8 mini, that the 1st punch out is the only decent one you get. What I mean is that from start to finish you can feel  the battery discharging, flight characteristics getting less punchy. Can you confirm that you feel this less with the 45c? Anyone confirm that the mylipo.de 205mAh alleviates this too?

@Oscar: that's caseless version ef-01 it also has buttons instead of dip switches and no noise issues. I'll have to check my bg order history for the correct prod. name.

@Tom: longer flight time does not come from higher capacity. The problem on stock battery is that this quad triggers low battery warning and enters "landing mode" too early. This and the fact that the pack took way too short to charge lead me to check its voltage after this 30 second flight. It was still over 4v, so way too much. That means that stock lipo voltage sag is the problem here.

Higher discharge also means that the pack can discharge stored power effectively, without the sag - you are using less throttle to maintain hover for example.

On new batteries i get a few minutes of roaming trough the house (didnt measure time). I measured the upgrade packs in the morning and two I used are on 3.7v, so perfect Smile

I didn't try stock motors on those packs.

About the discharge feeling - it surely is noticeable if you focus on it (it always is) but not to the point that it really matters.

I ordered exactly the same batteries 2 days ago. Good to hear, that they do the job! I've experienced the same problem with voltage sag like you Konrad. What is your flight time now? Please measure time the next flight Wink btw: what is your auw?

I'll measure it all up today Smile

Konrad, did you measure the difference in the FPV distance before and after the antenna surgery?
I would love to get rid of the cloverleaf, but i would like to retain decent FPV distance.

Actually no, i chopped the antenna off before new packs arrived. But with just this wire I am able to fly trough whole floor with decent signal - in one place there are three walls between me and the quad.

FYI on one of my 5" quads I am using a linear dipole antenna and am flying at over 200m distance with no problem. I don't think you will have enough rc range to loose video signal on this quad Smile

I think that it might actually be that sag that I'm feeling more than the standard discharge? I don't have a camera on there so obviously voltage not dropping low enough enter landing mode. Its funny, not sure if I'd heard the term 'sag' before, I made my original post shorter and left out the bit about it feeling a bit soggy after the 1st 30-45 seconds - I didnt want to inadvertently give anyone the impression that the H8's flight characteristics are anything, other than pretty twitchy, and I didn't want to hurt its feelings!

cool, thanks, do you buy your linear dipole antenna or do you make them yourself?

You can buy or make them. You probably have a few laying around - disassemble those black plastic sticks you get with every piece of fpv equipment and you have a dipole ready.

Ijust used a piece of 22awg wire I had on hand Smile thats a monopole antenna, it can't get any simpler than this Smile

EDIT: google on how to calculate antenna length if you want to go that route

AUW: 32.19g,
battery alone: 5.07g
flight time is good, but sorry didn't manage to measure, I get to fly 5 loops trough 4 rooms before forced landing. Having 5 packs, that's definately enough Smile

I've been performing this surgery as well - I'm astounded by the performance of the 25mw vtx's with whip antenna's when combined with a low dbi patch antenna (circular polarized or not). I didn't actually have many rubber ducky antenna around so ............ I actually bought some :Confusedhame!, shame!, shame!::

Some AIO's come with extras (Boldclash F-01 [~3.5g], etc...) but banggood sells them by the handful (warning haven't purchase these - but regretted not knowing they were around): 10X 1.5DBi 5.8G 5G Copper Tube Gain Antenna 12cm For RC Model Receiver

They come in singles, too.
