drilling holes in frame......
#1
I'm curious......and I will preface this by saying that I KNOW it's not generally a good idea to drill holes in a frame that is already full of holes, for obvious reasons.  That said, what are your feelings about drilling two small holes (2mm) in the top plate of a ZMR 250.  I am replacing the FC with a much smaller model, but due the location of all the other components (which I don't want to change), there really isn't a good way to secure the new FC.  The old one was secured with Velcro (it was in a hard case), but this one is shrink wrapped and doesn't lend itself to Velcro very well.  Thoughts, comments, ridicule?? Smile

I have drilled cam mount holes in my frames before and never had an ill effects to the frame. Only advice I will give is, use masking tape and mark your hole and have a super sharp drill bit and a vacumn cleaner hose as close as possible to the place you drill to suck up the cabron fibre dust (very bad for you to inhale).

You could also drill outside with a garden hose running over the spot you wish to drill as well.

I drilled crappy carbon of my ZMR with glass drill like this one: http://www.sdslondon.co.uk/product/tile-...-3-mm.html

You should use it with a low speed drill/electric screwdriver and you don't blow the dust around. It drills carbon like butter. Damn, I use this drill bit to make "leading holes" in almost everything except metal, it's a good tool to have.

Also - safety, like Biggles wrote. Latex gloves (splinters are bad) and face mask are a must.
Find me on Youtube and Instagram. I currently fly: DRC Aura, NOX5R, Minimalist 112 and drive a scrap RC car

I use a little dremel drill press and I wet the carbon plate to help trap the dust, but like Konrad and Biggles said wear gloves and a mask anyways.

if you have any eye protection it would be also good, i've taken out carbon splinter out of hand (didn't put the gloves on) and one piece flew off into my cheek... too close for eye, next time glasses or goggles.
All the best

Thanks guys for the responses.  I am well awear of the hazards of drilling, cutting, sanding CF and will take proper precautions.  I just didn't know if anyone had had any problems with durability of the frame...cracking/breaking/delaminating, etc. Apparently not, so I shall put it on the drill press and punch a couple of holes tonight. Thanks guys!! Big Grin

I've drilled holes and cut away some of the top plate on my ZMR 250 and it is still going without any breakages.

if you want to strengthen the frame after drilling, use sandpaper or file to smoothen the edges,
afterwards get a bit of CA (aka super glue, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyanoacrylate) and apply to the smotthened areas, it will strengthen the places you drilled and make it much harder for carbon to split in layers...
it is also a good practice to do that to the areas you expect to have a lot of abuse...

by this rule my whole frame should be dipped in CA...

I don't expect a problem, just thought it would be a good idea to check and see if anyone else had had a problem. They'll be small holes. Thanks Hamster.

Yep...had planned to coat the "new" edges with CA....don't know how much good it will actually do, but it won't hurt. Thanks Grisha.
