DJI Makes App To Identify Drones And Find Pilots
#1
If you already own or plan to buy a DJI drone and you value your privacy, then be aware of the new Drone identification technology that DJI plan to roll out at some point in the future to new and existing drones via a firmware update...

Just a reminder that the only reason that DJI is working on this is because the FAA is (or rather will soon be ) requiring all "drones" to have some sort of remote ID capability.  Sending out a WiFi signal from the drone with a "digital license plate" number is just one of the options for compliance. And according to DJI ( and the ASTM remote ID standard ) there will be no personal information in the broadcast.

Pilots who have a drone with capabilities such as this will be more likely allowed to have expanded flight operations such as flying over people.

Oh, and one more thing, this is competing with cell phone providers who are lobbying for there to be regulations requiring you to use a cell phone provider for remote ID, thus boosting their profits.  So there is that to consider too Smile

Yay! lets all keep jumping on the "DJI is the greatest thing since sliced bread bandwagon". Quick, I need my HD FIX!!!!!! Dodgy

Let's be clear about the Drone nomenclature. A Drone is a machine that is capable of autonomous operation, meaning it has the ability to complete a task repeatedly w/o any input from an operator once activated. What we fly, in fact, are not "Drones", and the FCC takes no consideration with this difference. DJI is a Drone manufacturer, not a UAV manufacture. This is like having to get a limousine license because I use the same roads as limousines and taxis do. Angry

I get your point, and I hate the word DRONE as it is used incorrectly all the time.  Much like the term ASSAULT RIFLE, which is used incorrectly each time it is spoken or written.... Angry

But with that said, the US military uses the term drone as a reference to UAS/UAV/UCAV.  A UCAV is human controlled in flight, many times at great distances.  The FAA refers to what we fly sUAS/sUAV, and then uses the term drone for simplicity and understanding sake.

FWIW sUAS is a "Small Unmanned Aerial System"-which means the aircraft, the TX, Goggles, and everything else needed for flight.  sUAV is a "Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle", which is the quad, wing, etc. only.

And I also agree, what we fly is nothing like the Phantoms, etc. that DJI mass produces. (and use their profits to negatively affect our rights and power against draconian legislation). Angry

I hope someone will clone the DJI system so I can finally get the image in my goggles I have been wanting for nearly 2 years.  If DJI is the only one who can get it together, then I likely will never get to fly HD.  I don't buy DJI or eat Ben & Jerry's icecream....
