DIY : THIRD HAND at only 19$
#1
I bought my first third hand, cheap version on ebay, when I started in this hobby.
- smaller
not quite maneuverable
- hard metal clip with no-needed-teeth
- light weight, no stable

My advice : is to build one yourself, good for your wallet and easy to do.
- bigger, space to work
maneuverable, arms stay where you place them
- Soft rubber flat clip
- heavier, so stay in place

PARTS:
  • wooden plate (or whatever plate)
  • Flexible Plastic Pipe 3.66$ ebay
  • Mini Spring Clip 0.37$ HomeDepot or 0.57$ Rona
  • Epoxy 1$ at your dollar-store

What's the size of the drill you used to drill the holes for the arms?

around 3/16 drill bit for the flex arm that I bought (link on my blog). But even if the holes are larger, epoxy will fill the gap forever ! Big Grin

ITs easier to buy one for 12 bucks here http://www.banggood.com/Wholesale-Brand-3_5X-12X-Third-Helping-Hand-Clip-Type-Magnifying-Magnifier-Glass-Quality-p-42199.html

100% correct. much easier to buy one ready made, But a lot of us enjoy building stuff and get a certain satisfaction from DIY. Big Grin

Plus the home built one does allow a lot more flexibility.

In the end it is all about what is right for the individual.

Remember, it is also much easier to buy a RTF quad but where is the fun in that? Big Grin

This is genius! I have the same basic helping hand but I find it limiting in a lot of ways. I wonder how easy it would be to build a bunch of these arms all around my work bench. Haha
