DIY Goggles with smartphone 3d goggles.
#1
How to convert a 3d smartphone goggle into a FPV goggle.

It all started on the facebook forum:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/Copter.F...432271036/

Parts used

Goggles (any 3d googles will do)

If you have a tight budget you can shave off some money by getting a cheaper set. On my older build i used these which i liked a lot. Very comfortable.

The receiver (any receiver will do)
http://www.banggood.com/5_8G-600mW-32CH-...85687.html

The display (look for a display that shows static when there is no signal, 5" is a good size.)
http://www.banggood.com/Blue-Sky-5-Inch-...47167.html
I repeat, get one that shows static. You absolitely don't want a unit that shuts off when the signal gets a bit weak. (Because during FPV the signal strength fluctuates a lot!)

Fresnel lens (i started with a single one, but ended with two CC sized ones.)
Aliexpress has lots of them

Other things: hotglue, tape, magnets and a small velcro strap for the battery.

The build

This is the nice shiny "Stormtrooper White" goggles i got.
The main feature i was interested in was the fact that the distance of the screen is adjustable. That´s what the knobs on the sides are for.

First we need to modify the unit. It was originally intended to be used for 3d video. So we need to remove the lenses and the wall that separates the left and right eye.
On my unit there was a small platform where the smatphone would sit. I also removed that.

Next i added the screen and the receiver.
Originally the screen comes in a plastic case. For our purpose we don't need that case. So we remove it.
To get the screen to stay in place i hotglued some magnets to the inside of the goggles.
My receiver came with two servo leads. One for audio, and one for video. Both with positive and negative for power. I connect to lipo to the positive and negative of the audio lead. That powers the RX and screen through the positive and negative of the video lead.
The white plastic of these goggles let through quite a bit of light. So i added some black tape to the inside to stop that light.

The screen comes with a small pcb with three buttons. To adjust things such as brightnes and contrast. I drilled three holes in the case and hotglued the pcb.

Finally i added the lenses. I used two credit card sized ones. 3x magnification.
The won't fit in the goggles. So you'll need to cut them down a bit.
I attached them to the goggles with magnets and 'extreme packing tape'

If the focus is not right. You can raise the lenses a bit by adding some spacers underneath. In my case i used extra magnet stacked on each other.

Finally i made a nice power cable extension to power the whole thing with a 2s 1000mah lipo. A low C rating will suffice. The lipo is attached to one of the sidebands with a velcro strap.
