Yes, you only need the positive and negative wire on the balance plug for the fan to work

It can be if you apply too much heat to the battery. Be careful.
If it isn't broke, fix it anyways!

And don't make a short circuit with your solder iron.

No lucky not, but I was still a bit nervous when I have to solder 3 pieces of 3S 5000 mAh batteries. I saw the movies what could happend so extra careful.

@christopher, heating up any battery is not smart, putting soldering iron there not safe, yet if you apply flux and do the soldering quickly you are good to go, i've salvaged few cells from dead batteries( good practice) and turned dead 4s to 3s and dead 3s to 2s only watchout for shorts "bzzzzzzz"
All the best

Don't buy the batteries in the video. They are cheap Chinese JUNK! Buy either Samsung 25r, LG he4/he2 or Sony VTC4/VTC5. I am using the LG HE4 with my base station and they will run for over a hour of run time.

Yeah 18650s and I just bought the highest reviewed ones I could for the lowest price on Amazon and they worked just fine Smile

For 18650 manufacturer recommend charging at only 0.5C. You can use the Lipo setting without problem.

That is why I made a MOT spot welder with an Arduino for timer control. Much safer. One of these days when I have time, I will write a tutorial.
