Great idea and video!! I used to make packs out of A123's for RC aircraft. But the 18650's were only 1100mAh. With the new high-capacity vaping batteries, (and for this application), this is perfect! Those are 18650's - correct?

Was any particular brand best for soldering?

I'm guessing that's what the balance tap is for - I charged my A123 packs that way (with my CellPro - it has a setting for Li Ion).

On my charger there is a li-ion setting.  I just use the fatshark charge lead and balance charge them at 3amps.    But I really don't see why lipo setting wouldnt work.  They still charge to 4.2v/cell.

Yeah 18650s and I just bought the highest reviewed ones I could for the lowest price on Amazon and they worked just fine Smile

Where did you get the Fatshark round battery cable?

If you guys want to add a battery indicator:

Will the goggles prevent draining the battery completely, or should we use 18650's with internal protection curcuit like theese batteries?

I've been thinking of doing this for a while. The Fat Shark battery is just terrible! When I charge mine, it jumps to 8.5 volts almost instantly, and the remaining mAh are pumped in between 8.5 and 8.6 volts.

Great tutorial TJ. I put one of these together last week. It was a pleasant surprise how easily the terminals took the solder, I thought it would be a battle.
I didn't have the wide heatshrink so I just wrapped a few more layers of electrical tape. Works great. Thanks for posting.

Is it dangerous to solder directly onto a battery? That seems unsafe.

So if I use a 18650 series battery sled, so I can charge the battery independently on an18650 charger..... I'll only need to connect the pos and neg from the balance plug to power the fan?
