Differences between mounting battery on top and bottom of the quadcopter
#1
What are the biggest differences between top and bottom mount lipo situations? Preferences and opinions welcome, I have flown mid top and bottom mount, but is there much of a difference other than being able to make frames smaller for bottom mount?

Depends what you do. For freestyle it is better to have bat on top and when racing then on bottom.

I crash most often from fast forward flight and getting too low. I typically hit the ground with the front arms and tumble forward. So I prefer bottom mount since that initial hard impact was destroying my top mounted batts occasionally.

Haven't damaged a battery since I switched to bottom frame.

Although it made me take more care with landing on firm surfaces. I bring a foam mat some times.

IMO having both setups I like it on bottom , especially racing seems to help land upright more in a crash due to the low center of gravity

On bottom is more "neutral" is the best way I can put it. The copter doesn't feel like it has a tendency to want to "fall" into the turns. But this actually is not necessarily a good thing. It's just different.

I think the biggest difference is just the center of gravity. I'd only say it really, really makes sense to change your whole setup from top to bottom mount if you're a high end pilot who will notice the difference. Otherwise just go with what you have.

We had a discussion about this earlier, where I did a quick test with the same quad. For me, it was very noticeable. The COG was at the prop line when the battery was top mounted and below when bottom mounted obviously. It took cornering much better when the COG was closer to the prop line, so at that particular quad, it was better to have it top mounted. With bottom mounted, it felt more sloppy and drifted more when cornering. This was a Martian 3 frame.

That being said, I also have a X210 with bottom mounted battery, and that quad doesn't feel sloppy at all. But it is at least 50 grams lighter than the martian. I assume weight also plays a big role in how the quad feels
