Design Your frame - Armattan Will Cut It

VERY well done tutorial!!  I am sure it'll enlighten lots of folks (including me) as to what is involved in designing and producing your own frame.  Thanks for taking the time and effort to do it! Big Grin

Thanks, Chris!  It helped to pass the time while I'm waiting on my frames.  Wink Whistling

While waiting for my frames from Armattan (they haven't arrived yet - but it's a holiday here), I decided to run a couple more tests of Armattan's services.  You may have noticed the price difference of the two frames in My Store in the posts above.  The production cost of 190 4mm frame was almost double that of the 155 3mm frame.

I was curious if the difference was mainly due to the CF thickness, or the frame size.  So, I decided to submit the 155 again specifying 4mm CF, and the 190 with 3mm CF.  (I used the same .dxf files, just re-naming them.)

I submitted one of these on this last Sunday evening, and the other early on Monday.  Both were approved this morning (Thursday - which is a holiday here). ~3 business days, not too bad.  Here are the results:

Here's a little summary table:

So it looks like the size made a bigger difference (in this case).  I don't know if their formula is based on carbon-fiber volume, but that would make sense I guess - that much of an increase in area would add to the volume more than the small increase in thickness.

So, if you are trying to decide between thicknesses for your design, a bit thicker won't change things that much. (And you can add a thicker/stronger or thinner/lighter option for your potential buyers very easily.)

My frames arrived!!  (Friday, November 25)

I promised a brief review and timeline.  I'll start with the timeline - I was going to do a fancy timeline, but my inbox tells most parts of that story.  (The top item is from the experiment I mentioned in my previous post.)

But that exaggerates the timeline a bit, considering that I didn't even submit my first (rejected) design until October 26.

For the two frames that are sitting in front of me:  Cool
  • 29 Oct - Submitted
  • 1 Nov - Approved and Ordered
  • 15 Nov - Shipped
  • 25 Nov - Received!
Less than a month from design submission - to holding my very own frames in my very own hands! (I will love them, and pet them, and hug them...*Big Grin - I am one happy camper!

I am working on setting up my worktable for shooting overhead video - I want to do a proper "Unboxing Video" of the frames (don't you just hate those?), but it's the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend here and I've been pretty busy cooking and eating.

If I can't get the video set up by this evening, I'll shoot some photos and post some specs here on Sunday.  But they really are here....

[Image: Ln8rwZXQwWtTUPrXlXRh3ZR2gdK2fntu62QYhp4t...24-h745-no]

(And yes, I've peeked inside, but I haven't unwrapped anything yet.) . Hmm...I guess it will be an "Un-enveloping Video". Big Grin

One note:  These were sent to me via Registered Airmail - a signature was required (there was no option to choose when ordering).

More very soon....

Wow! Wow! Wow!  I finally opened the package and all I can say is "Wow!" The quality of these frames is excellent - better than I had hoped - and I couldn't be happier!!  Here is the full "UnEnveloping" video:

If you are not into that, well here's a couple of photos.

That wraps up this How-to.  I am happy to answer any questions (or try to) that you may have about the process of using Armattan Productions' services - just post in the comments here and I will see them.

I will create a new thread tracking the prototyping of these designs.  Hopefully, everything will be finalized by Spring.  In the meantime, thanks for reading this!!

i love the design i don't understand the hard turn next to the fc (seems as a weakspot ) mount instead of a gentle turn (arc) towards other arm, this way the forces would spread equally.

beside above remark this botom plate + simlpe cage might be the next thing to build Smile
All the best

You could be right - but these are not designed to have a full cage above.  These are Pod-only designs (working on the pods as we speak).  These are intended to be a good bit lighter than other quads of similar size.  Hopefully they will be strong enough given the reduced inertial mass. I think they will be - but I will only know for sure by crash-testing a bunch... Big Grin

Here is a sneak peak of a rough idea of the 155 with pod and 2 cameras (the "pod" shown is only the rough overall shape - the final pod will be much more sculptured.  The camera angle shown is 15 degrees.  It is adjustable 15-40 and both cameras move together - the top camera will be a mobius mini).

(Edit: BTW, Those "hard turns" are 1.5mm radius arcs.)

Oh and btw runs very very well on my old xp laptop, compared to some other free- and trial-version CAD programs i tried before.

Does Armattan (or anyone) have a guide somewhere for complete CAD newbies? Smile

Armattan's instructions are pretty minimal.  There are a few good videos on youtube (search "QCad tutorial").

QCad also has an e-book in 4 languages that looks pretty good from the preview: http://www.ribbonsoft.com/qcad/book/qcad...iew_en.pdf (also available in french and german, full book also available in spanish)

The full e-book is around $30 and can be purchased here: https://www.ribbonsoft.com/shop/category...ategory=77

There's an outdated (2004 - but free) ebook posted here: http://www-mdp.eng.cam.ac.uk/web/CD/enga...manual.pdf

One hint I will give is to start out by picking a template that's in millimeters (I think one of the youtube videos goes over that).  The default (at least for me) was inches.

Good luck!

I thought i'd just start something. I'm not new to modelling, but it's been more than 10 years since... Thinking
This is just a first test of how to get the basic layout down. I'll remake parts of it (round off everything etc.),
and hand-cut a wood prototype to figure out the rest, don't know yet where the battery will come to rest.

Good to see you're getting comfortable with QCad Smile   If you didn't go with the Pro version, it's worth it (extra features may not be important to you, but it's a reasonable price and free upgrades for a year).  Looking forward to seeing your finished design.

This tutorial is awesome. Might just consider designing my own micro frames.
