Build Log, DemonRC NOX5R, X-racer F303 v3.1
#1
Today marks the begining of a beautiful friendship with my very first FPV race quad! Toy "drones" swept aside! Make room for the Demon. The NOX5R!

NOX5R Parts list:
FC- X-racer F303 v3.1
PDB- DemonRC Pulse PDB
ESCs- Racerstar MS35A
Motors- Emax RS2205S 2300kv
Props- Kingkong 5x4.5x3 (for now Wink ) 5051s coming Big Grin
Cam- Runcam Swift 2
VTx- Eachine TX526

I'll update this build log as I progress through it. As well as future changes/upgrades.

Frame is of excellent quality. Carbon is accurately cut and sharp.

Advertised weight without hardware is 80g  Thumbs Up
[Image: yVUQRvYl.jpg]

Frame prep all done. Sanded, glued and painted.

First mock up to checkout the paint job and see how the pdb and fc fit. Going to be a tight build for sure. My daughter says its colored like a frog. So I think we'll name it "Demon Frog" Wink (update: my daughter decided she didnt like demons so she has approved "Quad Hopper" instead lol Wink

Attached the flight stack to top plate with 3mm srews for structural support. (Discussion concerning the attachment of top plate to flight stack below in replies)

Enjoying the process, and taking my time. LEDs installed and wires planned out.

Pulse PDB prepared

FC in place

RX prepared

Then re-prpeared to fit Wink
[Image: bXKh2Hrl.jpg]
Attaching Rx and VTx to top plate. Double sided tape used for Rx and trimmed like the non-slip tape shown for VTx. Also all buttons can be reached while fully assembled  Thumbs Up

Trimed wires so that the top plate can be lfted for maintenance and repairs.

All built and kind of sad it's done Confused But I thoroughly enjoyed the process and I figured I would Big Grin
Here's a photo shoot and some weights for all you junkies like myself Wink Tongue

Thanks for looking!

UPDATE: Maiden flights were perfect! And OMFG is it ballsy! (fyi: this is my first build so take this with a grain of rice) Everything feels very very balanced! The stretched X design of the frame is not too exaggerated imo and feels very sable! +1 to DemonRC. Flight times averaged around 5 minutes (mild flying, only a few good punches) with 1300mah Tattu's leaving 3.78v - 3.84v still on the packs.

UPDATE: After some aggressive flying and my first real flips and rolls, I do notice some slight oscillations but nothing major. Tbh I am ised to worse on my toys Wink Anyways I look forward to learning some blackbox logs and working on my first tune!
Note: see post #20 for a taste of carbon carnage! DemonRCs carbon fiber takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin' Wink Thumbs Up

That's a challenging build for a first one - not a lot of space inside. Send pictures to Adam, this is so pretty Wink
Waiting for more pics Popcorn

BTW connect FC standoffs with top plate - it won't last too long using only 4 on front and back.
Find me on Youtube and Instagram. I currently fly: DRC Aura, NOX5R, Minimalist 112 and drive a scrap RC car

I think it's a really bad idea to connect the flight controller standoffs to the top plate. In the event of a crash, the flight controller will be subjected to shearing stress and this can do things like break solder joints, break internal connections in the ICs and damage your IMU.
I found this out the hard way breaking two flight controllers in a row on a frame where the flight controller stack was used as structure. Circuit boards and ICs simply are not designed to cope with that kind of stress.

You are right with all this. But Smile

What can happen here also is that if this plate is left like this, there is 10 cm of thin carbon that can break in half in any frontal crash, possibly shorting out stuff on the stack.
I myself never had problem while crashing with a bottom-to-top mounted stack and I have 2 quads built that way.

I'm suggesting this solution because I have already built a NOX5R, I have talked to the designer a few times about this design. Also... manual says so ;p

DroneOfPrey, you have some choices to make here Smile

Maybe it was just those terrible F3 Evo flight controllers then. Big Grin

I'm so over buying Dominic's latest and greatest hardware that doesn't even have firmware or a manual available when he puts them up in his shop.

Thanks for your input mates Smile I too was pondering about connecting the flight stack to the top plate. Without conecting flight stack as structural support the top plate is quiet flimsy in the center. After finally figuring the puzzle out of making it fit right, due to space limitations and not using the aluminum hardware, locknuts and 20mm screws, as the directions say to do for the flight stack. Confused Huh Cry  I am using shortened aluminum screws (3mm) for the top plate where it connects the flight stack with nylon standoffs (to encourage screws stripping/pulling out of nylon standoff vs shearing/damaging the PCBs) The rest of the flight stack is connected with all nylon, and the front and rear 30mm standoffs will be aluminum (when they arrive Tongue ) and have aluminum screws running nearly the full hight (Updated mock-up photo posted also, hopefully more tonight of the progress too) It took some time planning but it is much more solid now and i still have enough room for vtx and rx to be mounted under top plate without as much worry in a crash Wink

Who is Adam lol? And thank you very much! I wanted a color scheme that was very visible no matter where I crash it ROFL Also it matches my 100mph Rustler which is mostly neon green with splashes of neon orange and blue Wink Im a nerd. I know Big Grin

Nerd? Actually, I was going to ask if you are colour blind!

Big Grin

Only kidding. The build is looking good and I hope it's just as good in the air. Thumbs Up

looks pro without a doubt. Great work! I'll cross my fingers and hope for some warmth for you. It's been raining here which has made it sort of difficult to get out so I feel you but hopefully you'll find a window to get out and get in the air!

that's one awesome build Smile and laughed so hard how your daughter named your quad ROFL
I love the paint job, could you give me the link to the product you use for that?

Thanks Oscar!
Actually the paint is just 4 coats of a medium tipped paint marker from walmart and a steady hand Big Grin
[Image: BCIxMfXl.jpg]
Some tips would be to work fast per coat while the paint is still wet (flood the tip of the marker) so no clumping and wipe off any excess from the faces before it has a chance to dry to it. Wait for each coat to fully dry before adding the next. By the 3rd coat the paint should be getting thick enough to show full color and not show any carbon underneath. Then I finished by lightly wet sanding with 2000 grit (must be fully cured/dried for best results) and give a light rub/polish with a good microfiber cloth.

Also hang everything to dry as to not ruin your clean edges by resting it on newspaper.

Hope this helps Wink

PS: someone tell my wife I need to buy another frame exclusively for a paint tutorial ROFL
