My latest build I promised to publish - it’s using Runcam Eagle I won in intofpv freestyle competition (thanks again!).
Parts used:
As far as testing the camera goes - It’s great, image quality is perfect, hard for me to judge how it performs in sharp sunlight and to judge details in shadows, but transitions between bright, overcast sky and ground are instant. Additionally, I don’t feel slightly higher video lag to be an issue.
Thing I noticed about the Eagle… I got used so much to stretched 4:3 image, that with it I feel like turning “superview” off I’d also rather use a wider lens to be honest and standard lenses are unusable since this camera uses a bigger sensor. Hopefully Runcam will be selling wider lens soon.
Frame:
NOX5R is a racing XL type frame (long X). Designer claims that this stretched shape will help to avoid effects of difference in weight distribution between roll and pitch axes during sharp turns.
DemonRC frames use high quality carbon fiber - this one is not different, cuts are very clean, there were no rough edges. I filed them down anyway as I do that now on every frame to avoid possible wire and strap cuts.
The frame is very stiff and rigid after assembly. Standoffs of FC stack are effectively becoming structural support for the frame middle section. Battery can be mounted either on the bottom or top.
DemonRC also designed an aeropod for this frame and gopro mounts if you decide to use carbon fiber top plate. They are available as STL files on manufacturers website.
There is not a lot of space inside the frame, I can compare that to some 3” ones. I had to give this build more thought than other ones I assembled
You have to achieve a very low FC stack to be able to raise camera angle enough. The frame is designed with Runcam Swift in mind (mounting holes on that camera are placed differently), that probably makes mounting it easier. I will probably end up using my Eagle with its own bracket somehow.
Build
Parts used on that build, note that I mistaken TX/RX pads on OSD, I noticed that when I started building.
I started with desoldering all the wiring from ESCs and resoldered them to PDB first:
And then to the FC:
This way I’m using shortest wiring possible. I didn’t focus on making FC wiring as clean as possible, because I plan to change it to Demon Soul F4 that should arrive very soon.
Resoldered all the wiring to ESCs:
Added motors, VBAT, 5mm buzzer and OSD:
Added depinned RX (still so huge…), Eagle and VTX wiring:
I left OSD/UART1 TX wire loose, so I could add a jumper to be able to connect to naze32 with configurator. Will solder directly to other UART on new FC.
Finished build:
It weights 287 grams, which should put me on 450+g with 1300mah 4s lipo and about 550g with protected Xiaomi Yi stuck to the top plate.
Maiden flight
First LOS trial
Some raw footage from Yi if someone’s interested. Weather was horrible here, I’ll make a proper edit soon hopefully. Unless I mount new raceflight FC that I’m waiting for so much.
Currently on stock Betaflight 3.0 settings only with notch filter frequency changed.
Cheers!
Demon Soul F4 installed! Oh boy! Oh boy! Oh boy! I can feel the weekend already Raceflight, here we go!
