Current Sensor and OSD for Cleanflight/Betaflight?
#1
I recently finished a build using all KISS parts, and I'm really liking the current monitoring offered by this build.

I'd like to start using current monitoring on my other quads, but they are a variety of blheli/betaflight setups.

What current sensors are being used for mini quads with cleanflight/betaflight?

I use an RROSD, doesn't require any cleanflight/betaflight integration, e.g. it's totally standalone.

QuadRevo OSD Pro is another option, that gives you Timer, mah used, volts, and amps.

MinimOSD with MWOSD firmware also shows mAh current consumption and amps drawn.

You can configure it pretty much to show anything you want. I recently started using the KISS setup as well, its awesome!

I know how to show the data, I'm wondering how best to collect the data. Flight controllers in general don't have current sensors.

The KISS FC and ESC combo is simple, but it isn't as accurate as a real sensor, mostly it's only "making a guess".

With a real current sensor,, the current actually flow through it, that's how the data is collected. Then it gets sent to the FC or the OSD directly.

Do you use frsky? I've never tried it but you could use the frsky current sensor and them use a data logger. Not as neat as the RROSD though.

In general there are two approaches ADC sensor (real measurement) and Virtual sensor. The Virtual sensor uses known current measurements at idle/disarm and at full throttle plugged in a formula with the current throttle position to approximate the amps. For more info check out https://github.com/cleanflight/cleanflig...Battery.md

I've attempted the ADC approach, but most sensors I've evaluated are quite bulky and impractical so I've all but given up. This weekend I plan on attempting the virtual approach. One big note about virtual is that any changes in the current draw (new/different components, motors, even different props) will require recalibrating.

Getting the measurements into the OSD is somewhat easier - the simplest approach I've seen is MultiWii OSD firmware set to FC sensor.
The next build will be perfect! | Fleet and build info | YouTube Channel |

The power modules that APM boards come shipped with send out current and voltage measurements to the fc.
They are quite small enough to solder onto a 250 pdb, maybe some clever placing could fit them on a 200 sized copter.
Might have one or two lying around. Maybe I'll see if I try one this weekend
