hi all,
I just took the Part 107. I've been working with RF8. Just got a Taranis X7/FLYsight screen and a BETA65S. Having a hell of a time trying to make it work, hoping this forum can help me get it sorted.
cheers,
Jeff

Welcome to the forum! How was the Part 107? Did you just study using the FAA guide?

The simulator is a good place to start!!

Here is some info that might help you out with the BETA65S, it's just a bind and fly so it should be fairly easy to get flying: https://betafpv.freshdesk.com/support/so...ransmitter

I'm sure others here with more experience can get you flying in no time!

Thanks. I got a 93%. In addition to the guide I used this video as a main resource:

and this for practice tests:

I think I've got it bound correctly, but something is off with the throttle. When I power up the transmitter it gets the 'throttle not idle' error even though it's all the way off. Motors kick in as soon as I attach the battery.

When you go to Betaflight under the 'Receiver' tab, does the throttle input move when you move the sticks? You may have to change the input...it is probably set up as AETR1234...you might need to change it to TAER1234.

It does, I did just change that. It says that on the X7 too as well as mode 2 on the X7. The controls all seem to move right in "receiver" tab. Range is 1000/1500/2000.

Did you set up an arm switch? Is the model arming?

I think I did, set up a switch and I see the indicator moving, but when I plug the battery in motors spin up full blast not matter what I do to that switch or the throttle.

It is likely you did not setup the mode tabs for arming properly.

even if that were the case shouldn't the throttle still do something?

Throttle will do nothing if the quad is not arm.

Sorry if I'm being dense, but if it's not arming the motors could still run full on when I attach the battery and the throttle will have no effect?

I really don't know why it happens, but the same thing happened to me. Prior to me able to setting the arm mode to a switch, motors were just spinning up when I connected the lipo.

If you can post a screen shot of your 'Modes' tab and what switches have been assigned, it might help with diagnosis.

Welcome to the site Smile as you've already figured out from the thread people love to help work on this kind of stuff.

Quick question... you've said that the motors spin "full on"... When they spin, is the noise relatively reasonable or does it sound more like a loud violent whine? I am going to guess that you don't have props on when you're plugging the battery in otherwise I'd ask if it feels like it's trying to fly away... it's not worth trying that to find out though so don't put on props just to test.

The reason I am asking is to understand the difference between idle motors and actual half or full thrust spin. Motors even at half thrust without props spin fast enough that they will jerk the quad around a bit from inertia as they start up, whereas if they're only at idle it's more like a little twitch.

It's a little early to be talking about blackbox logs, but perhaps being able to see how much each motor is spinning could be helpful to understand this.

The results based on the answer... if they are just idling then you probably have just an arming/disarming problem which people are already helping with. If it's spinning with more thrust then you may also have the flight controller applying force to them which could be an arming/disarming problem plus the receiver issue mist still not be resolved.
