CLRacing F4S
#31
I've just bought some 100uF low ESR caps. I'm going to add one to each ESC and one bigger to the main battery connector. I really hope it will solve the issue...

When I bought my first AIO FC (Flame F4) I was impressed. It provides a very neat building and I immediately fell in love with the OSD. But I was very upset about the video noise. It wasn't so annoying but quite noticeable so after several unsuccessful attempt to fix it I started to look for a new AIO. My first candidate was the Matek F405 but I read so many complains on rcgroups so I decided not to buy... Maybe I'm wrong but as I see all AIOs have some issues. I don't know what is the reason maybe some new powerful motors and ESCs are generating more noise which disturbs the FC. I've never had any issues with my good old Xracer F303 v3.1 and as I see many people have the same opinion about this FC.

But it's another story... Sorry for the off topic and my English.

Hopefully I will be able to add the caps before the weekend and it will solve the issue...

It more likely bigger motors, ESC and faster looptime/gyro causing all the noise. ESCs use to come with caps, now we are just adding them back.

I have a 2in and an AIO. No caps and no problems with video.

The capacitors are in place. Smile I soldered a 100uF cap to each ESC . On the bench I wasn't able to reproduce the issue with the caps so tomorrow hopefully I will be able to fly without any issue.

UPDATE: There was no issue during the first four starts and I did many flips but on fifth the FC froze again during a flip. Sad

That is a bummer. I am putting a build together now. Will update if I am experiencing the same thing.

I'm looking forward to your experience. What ESC would you like to use with this FC?

Drone Mesh has many videos on Youtube about testing different ESCs for noise. The first complains with this FC about brownouts were reported from users who were using EMAX Bullet 30A ESC which is a quite noisy one according to this video also:

~30V spikes and the voltage drops is 8V. Unfortunately my ESC (Racerstar Tatto 35A) also not a good performer from noise point of view:

I think I will try a new ESC Racerstar Tatto 42A which generates less noise (you can see the test about this ESC in Drone Mesh's videos).  If I understand correctly the designer's explanation about the brownout voltage drops are more important in this case. Unfortunately my Turnigy Graphene batteries have more voltage sag in this cold weather which also could be another factor regarding this issue.

As I see we need some luck to choose the proper component for an AIO FC. I've read many complains about the AIOs and of course there are many positive feedback about these FCs as well but honestly I just need a solid performer FC and lots of stick time without any strange issues Smile
Maybe the safest way would be a FC with OSD but a serate PDB.

I am planning to use the Sunnysky R30A.

Glad I found this thread! Just curious before I click the buy button:

Wanting to get one of these and try and run this setup, but my current CL Racing F4 does not have enough UARTS. I am wanting to run something like this:

Smart Audio
Telemetry
SBUS
Runcam Split(needs both a TX and RX)

I am godawful at figuring out UARTS and the whole TX/RX thing by just looking at it. Would anyone happen to know if this setup would work? If it helps, the Telemetry is already run from my X4RSB as uninverted.

I don't have the CLRacing F4S... but i think this is how things should be connected in your case. Please can someone confirm?

There are dedicated pins for Telemetry, SBUS, camera control as marked in the picture.
You can use TX4 / RX4 for the Split, and set LED_Strip pin as softserial and run SmartAudio there (here is a tutorial about soft serial: https://oscarliang.com/betaflight-soft-serial/)

I am truly honored for the customized response sir!! Thank you very much! Just out of sheer curiosity, which design/features do you like better? The CL Racing F4S or the Betaflight F4? They seem almost identical to me, except the flash mem and the pad/holes thing.

The CLRacing F4S comes with camera control pin which is pretty unique (only good if you use it)
The dedicated SmartPort pin is also a nice addition, but it's not that big of a deal since you can use Softserial for the inverted signal, or get uninverted SmartPort from the RX anyway, so for the BFF4 is completely fine either way.

The solder pads on the CLRacing should be easier to work with than the through pins on the BFF4, but I have been told by more than 1 person that the pads are easily pealed off, so if you are getting it you must be careful, especially with the Vin/Vout, you can't remap those pins and you could lose OSD capability for that.

Both boards are at the same price this week (BFF4 on sale) by the way, otherwise the BFF4 is $10 more...

I would probably vote for the BFF4, purely because I am using it and it's working great for me, I have no experience with any CLRacing FC so i can't comment on its reliability.

I have been a fan of the CL boards for a bit now, but have had quite a few problems with them. Mainly things just die on it. Had one where the accelerometer crapped out, that caused a few hard crashes. And on another build, not sure which component, but started getting horrendous noise from the video going through the board, where once there was none. I am leaning pretty hard to the BFF4, simply because of the issues I have had on the other boards. Plus, I will not have to change out all of my ESCs due to the known ESC issues the CLRF4S has.

You can get everything wire up on your current FC. This is how I would do it.

SBUS to RX1
Smart Audio to TX1 but you need to convert it to soft serial, so technically soft serial 11
Telemetry to TX3
Runcam Split on TX4 and RX4

I thought the CL Racing F4 was not capable of SoftSerial?

I have not heard of that. Personally, I have not tried it. I assume it is more of a Betaflight thing. Worth a try.

Hooked up the board to BF and turned on "soft serial", with nothing showing up under ports. Damn. Got excited too!
