clean flight hook up
#1
I  am totally new to this.  My daughter wanted to build a drone.  She is into 3D printing so she found this 3DFly micro quad kit she wanted to build.  So now we have it build and I am not sure how to hook it up.  We downloaded the cleanflight chrome app and then we plugged in into the usb port.  It had a flashing green light, then it stopped and the light at the usb was a steady red light.  It went to a ICL mode I believe....there are no tabs to click on or anything.  I saw a video and they guy typed in set motor to 32000 and then set throttle to 1000....then we type save and it just says rebooting.....but nothing happens. We disconnected it and need help.   I still do not have a transmitter.  I am wondering about getting this one ???  FrSky Taranis Q X7 2.4GHz 16CH Transmitter     I know pretty much nothing, but we got this far, so maybe someone can help me help my daughter.   When she wanted this she thought we would have it flying in 2 hours.  Anyway, thanks for any help.

Greetings and welcome to the forum! I think you'll probably find the answers you need here: https://oscarliang.com/3dfly-micro-quad-...hovership/

As far as the transmitter, the first thing you need is to make sure that your transmitter is capable of the same protocol as your receiver. If you got the Frsky version of the kit, then the transmitter you mention will work, but it may be a bit of overkill. That transmitter will do way more then is required to get this little guy in the air. However, if this is something you think you are your daughter may continue to pursue, then it may be a good choice. IF on the other hand you have the Spektrum (DSMX) version, this transmitter will not work with out mods or addons and you may want to consider a Spektrum transmitter. I am not very familiar with them so I hesitate to advise you.

The one thing I am sure of is that you're at the right place to find your answers. There are a lot of good folks here that are very knowledgeable and are happy to help. I am sure someone will come along that knows vastly more then I do.

This a great father son/daughter hobby!! Welcome and enjoy!!

It is a Frsky.  What transmitter would you think would work?  I do not need overkill.  I also need cheap!  Smile  I will look at the link.  I think I did see that.  I opened clean flight and I do not know how to get it off the main page.  I went to firmware flasher and it says to choose a board......I do not know what to do.  Cry  I will take a look at that link. Thanks for the reply.  I am the mom....so and I really do know nothing!!  haha

My appoligies.....I wrongly assumed your gender by making an assumption I shouldn't have. Sad   All of us here at one point new nothing, so don't let that slow you down.  Learning is half the fun!!

As for transmitters, that's a really broad subject and there are other folks on here that could better advise you then I and I am sure some of them will be along.  In  the mean time, take a look at this:  https://oscarliang.com/choose-rc-transmi...uadcopter/.  This may answer a lot of your questions. Big Grin   If not, do what research you can, but if you can't find the answer, there are LOTS of answers here and plenty of folks willing to share them. Big Grin

That is ok!! I think I looked at that page.  I didn't see many choices for frsky.     Thanks a lot for the reply and help.  I am still needing help to know what to set this board on in clean flight.  I saw it was compatible with the Naze 32, but I don't see that listed.  I only see Naze, but then there are a lot of choices in the firmware box.   Does anyone know what I can do to set it up.  There is a link http://www.fisselrc.com/BBB32/  but it is not working.....so here I am.

Hi there and welcome to the forum!

My 2 cents on the radio - if the price of the Q X7 is not prohibitive for you then it's a great option. Indeed it may be a bit overkill for your setup, however it's something that will last long if you/your daughter stick with the hobby and also has a good resale value in the worse case as it is a very popular radio right now.

On another topic, most people are running BetaFlight these days as it's more actively developed than Cleanflight. This means that there'll likely be more resources about it online to learn from (there's also a ton of info about cleanflight but it may be a little outdated). This being said, Cleanflight is a perfectly good choice of firmware as well so don't get me wrong Smile

If you have further questions do not hesitate to ask, as sirdude said, there'll always be someone around willing to help.

Welcome fair67! Congratulations on figuring out how to flash the FC on your own - that's great! The Q X7 that tozes mentioned is probably the best-for-lowest-price option for a transmitter. Looks like Aloft Hobbies (in CA) currently has them in stock for $110 and they can ship FedEx or USPS Priority mail (if in a hurry). http://alofthobbies.com/frsky-taranis-q-x7.html

Good luck to you and your daughter! And keep us posted.

Dumb question.... when I plug in the battery isn't a light supposed to come on? I got lights to come on in the Cleanflight program. Can anyone be of help as how to pair it? I took your advice sloscotty and ordered the Q X7! WOW!! That is going to take time to figure out in itself. Any help is greatly appreciated on how to pair it. I am wondering if the wire for the battery is not soldered good enough or why a light is not coming on when I hook up the batter. I am so lost.....

This is the time when some pictures of how you have connected everything together would really help.

Here is a video on assembling the Beef Brushed board with the MicroFRX receiver.  At about 10 minutes in, he goes through the binding procedure (what you think of as pairing).  Basically you put your Transmitter in bind mode (see the Q X7 manual to get it set up for that), then hold some tweezers or paperclip to bridge the bind pads on the receiver while plugging in the battery.

And yes you should figure out first why you get no lights when plugging in the battery.  Like unseen says, some close-up photos of your soldering would be helpful, but you need to double check to make sure the soldering is complete with no bridges or "cold joints" (dull grey - or not smoothly flowed onto the pads surrounding the holes for the wires.  Use a magnifying glass to check).  The video shows soldering the battery pigtail earlier in the video.

Here is a good article (with good photos) of common soldering problems: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-guid...n-problems

Do you have a link to the flight controller? It's hard to tell sometimes, but I don't see a receiver

She tried to start the motors in the clean flight program and they did not spin, so I am wondering if the wires are not right for that. I am not sure about why the battery will not make anything light up though. Maybe it just needs to be soldered a little better.

It's there.  (The three wire connection in the middle.)  Typically the black wire goes to GND and the white to PPM, but the wiring the way she has it should work OK - she has PPM to PPM, 3V to 3V, and GND to GND (no need to redo it as long as the soldering is OK).

It's hard to tell if the soldering on the battery connector is OK.  You might flip the board over and touch the soldering iron (with solder) to the where the wire tips come through the board. (At least get us a good close up photo of the other side.) . Also, if your 4 wire pin connector is soldered, it looks like you could have some incomplete soldering there as well.  I suspect her soldering connections are not sufficient.
