another NEWBY question.. does it matter which configurator i use ???  OR which is better ? Beta / or Clean Flight

You have to use the specific configurator that corresponds to your firmware.
Better? Depends what you want. Bleeding edge would be betaflight. Hance the name beta. New features are being tested on this firmware. I believe most of us here run Betaflight.

Cleanflight is solid. Features tends to be proven before it gets put into Cleanflight.

OK cool !!!!   been watching and learning Beta flight videos  looks like a pretty solid user friendly program... 
QUESTION for you VooDoo... went to flash my XM+ receiver.  i plugged into the back of my Qx7.  and had the pins right went into " WRITE FIRMWARE"
and all is downloaded onto the sim card.... and an ERROR msg came up saying bottom pin not reading !!!!!!   WTF ????   LOL  any ideas. .

On the QX7, you have to use the Port on the bottom of the TX.

Betaflight is more commonly what FCs ship with. While BF is supposed to be the more experimental branch, the truth is the issues you have to put up with are minimal. Like at first my quads were stuck in airmode, but I just learned how to land with it on. It was a minor irritation at best, and has long since been fixed since 3.1.7
