Clean DVR install on Quanum Goggles
#1
It’s always like to watch HD recordings of my flights, and it’s a good way to show our hobby to friends, but fact is that sometimes we just don’t care and just want to fly. You can still record FPV footage using built-in DVR in top-end goggles. My problem is that I use cheap (and good) quanum box-style goggles that don’t come with DVR functionality. In the past I’ve used Hobbyking silver DVR Oscar was kind to send me, but while it served it’s purpose for a few months, it was hard to keep it on the goggles all the time.

I got myself a small Eachine ProDVR. But I didn’t just want to strap another bunch of wires, it already looks like a christmas tree Wink I came up with an idea to route all necessary wiring inside the goggles monitor case. Final “product” looks like this:

Pretty clean huh? Here’s a shot of monitor after my previous wiring fixes:

Monitor cover - to open it, you have to unlock six tabs. Photo to give you idea where the tabs are:

Wire order for reference (+, gnd, audio in, video in):

First fit:

Solder some new wires to the socket legs. I could remove the socket completely, but I’m too lazy ;p
BTW, I desoldered white wire later since this is audio pin - it can go directly to DVR.
Also remember to bathe this in hot glue or epoxy:

Optional step: show some love to your dog while hot glue gun heats up.

I soldered all necessary wires together: audio goes to DVR, rest is Y-split, + and gnd goes to monitor directly and a 5v pololu for DVR. I have to add a capacitor here since recordings get interference from the regulator.

EDIT (added 07 oct 2016): I've read that this DVR accepts 3.6-5V, so 5V pololu noise could potentially cause trouble. You can get a regulated one and set it somewhere in middle of those values.

Monitor closed in its case:

And again - my new “integrated” DVR Smile

Happy hacking!

Much better than having it hanging off the side of the goggles.
Current quad: ZMR 250 / DYS SE2205 / Littlebee 20A ESCs / Drone Lab 1500 4S / Naze32 Rev5 / BF 2.7.1
FPV: Runcam Skyplus / Aomway 200mw VTX / Fatshark DomV1

That is a great idea. Also perfect timing.  I use the same goggles and I have the same DVR scheduled to be delivered tomorrow  along with some 5v step down converters.  I was going to try and hide more wires on the thing, but your build looks so clean.  Thanks!

It looks clean on the top, underside is a horror  Big Grin

Remember to add a cap to 5v for DVR, it will work without it of course but you'll get ugly interference on recordings.

Thanks for the tip about the Cap.
I have a selection of them at home what type or rating do you recommend?
Sorry if this seems like a simple question, but do you mean install it inline with the 5v line.  Huh  Like between the 5v power wire and the DVR 5v.

LIPO ----->(5V step down) ----->(5v wire)----->CAP----->DVR

Not inline, just like always to filter stuff: 5v to cap+ gnd to cap-, on the wire somewhere close to DVR. If installed like this, a cap acts like a battery, holding voltage when it dips and lowering it while V raises. Just very quickly Smile

Whatever you have on hand, 6,6V or larger. Can't say what capacitance, I presume that 220-470uf should be enough, but I havent soldered and tested mine yet. Low ESR type always works wonders, but normal electrolytic may be fine too.

Thank you.  That makes much more sense.  I'll have to try it this weekend.  Smile

optional step => most important steps Smile alternative solution if you don't have a dog, look at yourself in the mirror Big Grin haha

I used the circuit board that came with the quanum goggles..the video switcher circuit..modded it and wired the DVR parallel..but this is a much better solution..is video play back and stuff possible? Or just recording?

Using just what you see on last photo, you can only record. But DVR sockets are exposed so you can plug into video out and use that as a source. If you want to be able to switch, you may make one yourself or use quanum switcher somewhere inbetween of course.

Update: 6.6v 330uf normal cap clears a lot of interference, but not completely. Get a low ESR one Smile

Thanks for your research. I'm planning on wiring mine up this weekend. Even if it is raining outside. Sad

This mod, does not enable playback from the SD card, does it? Shouldn't be looped from vRX -> proDVR -> Monitor

I guess the proDVR supports that ? Big Grin

Do anyone have a problem with black videoplayback? Like nothing is recorded

It does - all you need to do is plug DVR video out to monitor video in. Tested 10 minutes ago ;p Sorry for wire mess - I need to resolder connectors Wink

EDIT: I guess it goes into "Playback mode" or something
