CL1 DIY build issues (part 2)
#1
Hello,

This is part 2 of the old post: https://intofpv.com/t-rotor-riot-cl1-build-issues

All the past issues have been fixed, now I have a new one.

Specs:

       CL1 kit: (discontinued)
             Tx: Taranis X9d+

Current problem:

Everything seems to be working and responding just fine (checking when connected to Betaflight).

All channels are mapped correctly and the model is responding accordingly.

After arming, all sticks have the proper response until I start applying throttle.

Once throttle starts being applied, the motors seem to lose control and don't reset to idle after I throttle down. The only way to bring them down is to fully stop them via disarming

They never go back to idle, and they are not all spinning at the same speed. Additionally, after applying throttle the same glitch appears to happen when I try ANY other controls, nothing seems to reset back down to their idle mode.

I am not sure what the problem is since the model and channels all respond correctly BEFORE touching throttle.

Any idea what the issue might be? Could it be some issue with the modes? (Modes screen pic attached)

Here is a short video of the issue:

Let me know if any more info is needed.

Thanks.

The video shows as unavailable.

Any chance you’re doing this with props off? If so, it’s normal behavior. It’s also normal behavior with props on if the quad is held down.

Your flight controller is expecting movement as it throttles up- that movement can’t happen with no props or with the quad held down, so it tries harder and harder to make it move.

Try putting props on, take it outside, and arm it and give it a bit of throttle. Keep your finger over your disarm switch just in case.
Dangerous operations.

Disclaimer: I don’t know wtf I’m talking about.
I wish I could get the smell of burnt electronics out of my nose.

Does the video work when you open it in youtube?

I am doing this with props off. So it is normal to not be able to bring the RPMs back down after applying throttle, with the props off?

It definetely concerns me to try a flight with this issue persisting on an untested, new build.

Thanks

It is absolutely normal behavior with props off.
Freaked me out on my first build as well.

With props off, once you give it some throttle, motors will accelerate on their own- sometimes to max throttle, sometimes to random erratic speeds- and they will not go back down to idle when you bring your throttle down.

Put some props on and try it out in a safe area. Just be ready to disarm in case there are any issues. Smile

Yea, that was absolutely it, this thing can fly fine Big Grin .
And to think Ive sat on this thing for over a year thinking it was messed up but I had actually built it correctly..... Dodgy

Only thing left:

battery options

I had some old Tattu 1300 mAh 4s batteries that seemed to hold a charge in all cells just fine but it seems that they may be too old and out of use to use at this point...

When I try to fly, it only has "punchy" power at the very beginning and then only flies for a few seconds before dropping out of the sky... the batteries are also drained after this so I guess I didn't store them properly.

So I guess I am in the need for some new batteries, any suggestions?

I want good power but also some longish flight times, maybe a couple suggestions?

Thanks SO MUCH for your help.

I’m glad you’re in the air. Smile

Yeah, that sounds like bad batteries and battery sag.
Other folks are probably better to advise you on batteries for a 5”, I primarily build 1.6” to 4”.

I’m a fan of CNHL batteries, primarily because they’re cheap. They tend to be heavy though.

For lighter weight economy batteries, GNB are good.
A lot of people rave about Tattu batteries. I haven’t been that impressed with them in my limited experience with them, but they are supposedly the best you can get according to some folks.

Based on your motor kv I’m assuming this is a 4s build. I’d probably run somewhere between 1300mah and 1600mah 4s on it. I don’t think you’ll go wrong with any of these:

GNB 1400mah 4s 120c:

CNHL Speedy Pizza 1550mah 100c 4s:

CNHL Ultra Black 1550mah 150c 4s:

Tattu R-line 1550mah 130c 4s:

I will get some of these.

Thanks again, you've been a huge help!

So I fly all three of those.

So bang for buck, CNHL easily.  You can get more batteries for less.
I also like GNB and have been using them since I first started, using the yellow/black 90C Li-HV lipos without issue.

I am also one of those Tattu people.  I only fly one Tattu battery size so take this with a pinch of salt.  I have three 3S 450mAh lipo.  These packs give 2+ mins of flight more than my CNHL 3S 550mAh packs.  They are bloody expensive to buy.  i got mine with the three Cine8 clone quads I got, so almost a free lipo with each quad.  They turned out to just be better.  The only lipos I have that come close (but aren't 3S) are my 2S GNB 660mAh lipos that also give around 6-7 mins of flight time.

The other thing is CNHL have deals on almost every week.  So the last one was 35% off if you spent $99 which is a fairly good deal, plus if you sign up an account and like them on social media or something you can get free postage too.  best time to buy packs from them are around major holidays.  A couple of month packs they had 4S 650 packs at some crazy price for a week, like $25 for four and back around New Years day I got many 2S 450 packs for crazy prices.

So right now on the current sale you can get 2x 4S 850mAh (US Warehouse) for $26 or 2x 4S 1500mAh for $38.  You would need 8x 850's (26 x 4 = 104 - 35% = $67.60) or 6x 1500's (38 x 3 = 114 - 35% = $74.10) to qualify for the 35% off.  But that would be quite a decent saving.

More good knowledge and sources!

Ill have to keep my eye out around holidays for those deals. And i may pick up some Tattus down the road.

Thanks for the info!
