Chrome App Store is closed (affecting betaflight etc)?

Chrome Apps are no longer to be supported. Wonder where this leaves the UI for (race|clean|beta)flight?

What will Betaflight do since Chrome apps are going away? The native configurator is available for testing now!

this might help: https://oscarliang.com/download-betaflig...figurator/

Hey Oscar, thanks for the link to the native configurator, I hadn't heard about it! I thought they would do something with NW.js or Electron. Makes perfect sense, as they can use the same codebase rather than starting over.

I've heard that Google is pulling the plug on this because not enough people use them. In fact to quote them just “1% of users on Windows, Mac and Linux actively use Chrome packaged apps"

1% of chrome users is ~= 20,000,000 people

Yeah, it doesn't matter that a community like ours considers a handful of chrome apps to be essential. We just have to get over it because we're not a big enough group to get support from someone as big as Google.

I say the above with partial sarcastic bitterness, and partially with an understanding of the pragmatism of the decision.

I blame them for screwing us up, but I don't blame them for the decision... if that makes sense?

I just downloaded the standalone app, though it is just a Release Candidate presently. It works fine. I agree that it feels like the big G is leaving the little people to deal with our own issues.

It's not really "standalone" but works nicely even without Chrome being installed.

And BTW, INAV also has standalone version. Cleanflight does not

So... will current apps keep working, or might a future chrome browser update disable the app functionality completely?

Based on the article it looks like they'll keep working, but I wouldn't be surprised if eventually they kill all of them on us.

This is my feeling as well, but for now my understanding is they will continue to provide browser extension style apps and are doing away with external type apps only.  At least BF is looking at this seriously enough to develop an honest standalone application for us to shift to.  This leave BHeli and Cleanflight to follow suit...hopefully sooner than later!

the trouble with standalone app is OS compatibility, for example BLHeliSuite only works in Windows. It's a PITA for Linux and Mac users. Chrome App is/was a great solution to compatibility.

Are the newer apps not extensions? Those won't be affected they say. Apps will be available on Chrome OS. All part of the hostile takeover ...lol...

That is true, Oscar. Once I figured out the permissions issue, I have been able to use my Windows and Linux computers without being able to tell the difference in the interfaces. Not sure if the standalones work with Wine, so it would be either VBox or Windows to use them if not.
