Choosing between Naze32 Rev6 and F3 Flight Controller
#1
Hi Guys,
I recently saw a comment reply that you posted on your blog to a user it stated:
(you cannot use soft serial in the latest betaflight releases if you are using F1 flight controller due to resources limitation, it won’t arm if you do.)

Is this also true for Naze rev6(This is a Full Naze)? I was hoping to use the following:

X4R on SBUS connected to GND, 5V and Pin 4
X4R SmartPort connected by bridge to Pin 5-6 (SoftSerial)

Micro MinimOSD connected to UART1 TX and RX pin (I would unplug this before using USB)

I really wanted to try out the new BetaFlight firmware to use Airmode.

If this is the case can you please point me in the direction of a F3 FC that could handle all of my gear? I just purchased this Naze Rev6 for $22 so it would be a pain to know that it was a waist of money.

Or can changing firmware to Cleanflight for example make my board useful again?

Thank you for your time.

Hi, Yes it applies to all F1 boards including the Naze32 rev6.
I think you can still use softserial for Smartport, but just means you cannot run 2Khz mode, and you probably have to stick with PID controller 1 (rewrite)... I don't run smart port normally so i don't have a definite answer.. but if you cannot arm, then you know what's going one hehe

Each F3 board has their goods and bads... have a search on my blog for F3 boards reviews... also check out the Lux f3 review by a forum member:

Ok I am starting to understand the reasons that the board is not capable of handling the new PID Controller and Soft Serial.

Would it be possible for me to instead use:

X4R on SBUS connected to GND, 5V and Pin 4

Micro MinimOSD connected to UART1 TX and RX pin (I would unplug this before using USB)

If I used this setup and never activated SoftSerial, Could I then use all the benefits of the betaflight firmware (LuxFloat/AirMode/2Khz Mode) And still be able to Arm?

Or should I just bite the bullet and go for a F3 Flight Control board?

I read some reviews and this board looks great, What do you think?

I explained to my wife that the board I currently have doesn't have a fast enough processor and she understands that I need to purchase a new one. (Thankfully the price is not to bad)

Ok and lastly, on my OSD I want to be able to see an artificial horizon that moves when I do, As well as the altitude on the display.

Do I need the Full Deluxe 10DOF or just the Acro 6DOF to accomplish this.

Thank you once again and sorry to ask so many questions, (This is my first build using something other than OpenFlight and CC3D FC's)

Hey StrangeClouds,
I was just sipping my coffee and reading your post. I thought I could lend a hand on your dissension. I have 3 builds 2 of which have under gone rebuilds with various FC and osd's ranging from cc3d to naze 32rev5 and rev6 to SPF racing and now the new Lux (currently building). I personal would get the F3 board, and the reason why ill add it will run everything you listed without problems and it  will be plug and play. The way I compare the F1 and the F3 is if you have a ten year old computer at home and compare that to a new computer you'll see a big big performance increase. I feel that soon the F1 boards will go the way of the dinosaur, the cost isnt that much different.

Ok now for my experience with the Naze32 rev6 and the Sbus. I wanted the osd and the telemetry for my taranis; I like having my transmitter telling me what my battery levels are and I wanted the osd for my pid tuning even though I dont like having info in my goggles. I did have everything hooked up and running on the bench Sbus, osd and the telemetry, to get the 2khz I turned off the Mag, Baro and Acc. When turning the Acc off you'll lose the artificial Horizon on the osd.  I took my ship outside and took it for a spin, 30 seconds into the flight my ship would just fall out of the sky and do some twitching and the FC would reboot, I also would lose video feed, not good. I wrestled with the naze32 rev6 for about 2 weeks, disconnected the telemetry (smart port) and turned off the 2Khz, everything was fine after that. Everything is fine with my other 2 quads same set ups but with the SPR (FC). I am now currently installing a Lux FC and took the rev6  and put it in the parts bin.  I think if you are just using the osd and the Sbus youll be fine, but if you want telemetry your going to need to make a choice osd or telemetry not both.

I am not a big fan of buying clone boards for the price diffrence it is not really worth the 10-20$ difference. And if you read some of the forums youll find some people have had problems. Not to say there hasnt been issues with the original's but at least you can call for support or exchange it. While I have been in the hobby a short time (3 years) I can tell you dealing with China you cant return anything without it costing more in shipping then the part is worth.

As for buying a fully equipped board baro, mag. That all depends what you want on your rig but the more "stuff" you put on the more youll have problems. If this build your doing is a 250 size I personally would get the acro board. Trust me after a few times adjust your pid's your not going to want to adjust anything else, keep it simple.

Hope this helps and good luck

can you come over and explain to my wife why I need another quad too? Smile

Hey Fly4Props,

Thanks you for your detailed input. After researching more into the matter. I have also came to the same conclusion as you have. The Naze Rev6 is just not cut out to handle my current needs. (Instead of letting it sit in the parts bin I am going to replace the CC3D on my Hexacopter with it)

I purchased a SPRacing F3 mini and it is supposed to arrive on Friday. I did not want to deal with the hassle of a clone either. I have read the manual for this new board and also every page of the forum and it has 3 dedicated UART serial connections so I know for a fact it will work out great and the F3 chip can handle the 2khz.

I am going to use telemetry on my Taranis because for some reason it gives me a sense of safety even though I will have the same information displaying on my OSD.

Tell your wife that you absolutely need another one! It is a life or death situation and valentines day just passed. This was the only reason my wife let me talk her into it.

I will be sure to come back and write either a reply to this post how the board is or I will make a new post to review it. I will send you a PM to let you know when I make the post. Good luck to you whenever you get around to your next build.
