Can't tell air-mode in BF 3.1
#1
Hey Guys,

Recently when I disabled my accelerometers on all of my quads I changed my switch that was previously for flight mode to just airmode on and off. Then I started to experimenting... I have noticed that I cannot feel any difference between having air-mode enabled or not. In a blind test I would not be able to tell you which was which and probably wouldn't even be able to tell between the 2. As those of you who have seen my videos know, I fly an open field which means the only fun stuff to do is over the top aggressive acro moves... when you don't have trees to fly around you flop and flip around in the air for fun!...

one thing that may be contributing to this is I don't always go 0 on the throttle... It's very common for me to leave a little bit of throttle out of habit, I discovered when trying to figure this very topic out. So I've tried killing the throttle during big moves and I still just cant tell...

Is it possible that BF3.1 is compensating more with airmode off thereby having airmode=off being closer to airmode being on?

Hi Carl,

I'm finding Betaflight acts differently with between my quads (PIDs, antigravity etc), but airmode is one thing that seems pretty consistent. I disable on a switch before coming in to land and if I do anything that requires shutting the throttle off the quads attitude just doesn't seem to hold as well, and the stick inputs on 0 throttle make it fly real messy. I reckon I could definitely tell in a blind test!

I look forward to seeing what others have to say.

Do you try to yaw on minimum throttle? I remember the ancient days when quad had absolutely no yaw authority with airmode disabled. Don't know how it behaves today Smile
Find me on Youtube and Instagram. I currently fly: DRC Aura, NOX5R, Minimalist 112 and drive a scrap RC car

I generally use much less yaw at zero throttle. In fact what happened when I developed the habit for maintaining a little throttle is I started to use yaw more in my acro moves. It's kind of difficult for me to get myself to use yaw and put throttle all the way to zero... Which I hadn't really thought of consciously before. This may be why I don't notice a difference. Perhaps it's easier to handle a basic flip or no-yaw roll without. hmmmmmm... I might have to give that a try this weekend, weather allowing.

Air mode head wag (non invertet)... feels ok... airmode off head wag... feels ok... I'll post video soon... I still can't tell except when landing.

Are you using the latest version? There was a bug in 3.1.x that didn't let you turn off airmode. It should be fixed in 3.1.6 or maybe only in 3.1.7, not sure which.

Also, throttle needs to be below min_check.

I think my previous post is wrong, i guess that bug is still present in 3.1.7 and was fixed for 3.2 which won't be released until october lol ...

In that case I am pretty certain that this is what is happening in my case!

I can confirm... 3.1.6 was the root cause of this question.

I have 3.1.7 on the pirat... and wouldn't you know it that thing wasn't flying right... I'd do rolls and flips and the thing would go wonky... I was like "WTF" (F standing for frig of course)...

then I realized... oh I don't have a habit of turning airmode on any more... then the pirat flew better... I think I might just rig it to always be on... I am already used to landing with airmode so bleh I should just stick with it that way. The key to landing in airmode: never land with a trajectory towards yourself (the hopping can be dangerous)... The rest is just coming in for as gentle of a landing as possible to minimize bounce and disarming on touchdown.
