Can a different FPV antenna or High power FPV Tx can improve Range on 5.8Ghz Video?
#1
Hello,

Happy new year!!

I am trying to setup FPV on RC car using 5.8Ghz system. I want to drive around my house which is 60 meter round trip.

Attempted to run using Eachine VTX03 with stock antenna and Eachine ROTG01 Rx with pagoda antenna with VTX power set to 200mw.
When the car reached other end of house, I lost signal briefly then regained as its moved on.
Attached a diagram and video that explains the problem. I was testing and camera was not mounted properly hence the video is shaking.

I was wondering if there is a different type of Antenna on the Rx and Tx that can resolve the issue? Or a high power VTX like 600mw?

Already attempted with 25mw and 50mw and found that 200mw gave me farthest range.

Note - I wanted to go for 5.8Ghz system only as that's the only one I can afford or get hold of.

Thanks.

You have to understand that these radio signals are mostly line of sight with some penetration abilities. Unfortunately, 5.8hz has the weakest penetration through walls, trees, etc. Here's a good tutorial that explains everything in depth:

Dude, where's my quad?

Hello
Referencing your sketch you are standing on the  south wall which is the longest distance.

Have you tried standing on the east or west wall? this would give you less of a distance for the signal to travel through things.

Another thing that happen to me after setting up racing gates around my house. Again referencing your sketch: I normally stand on the east or west wall about center and the FPV would get VERY iffy on the opposite side ( i also have some trees on all sides). My home has a garage on the west wall lower corner and I happened to be standing in front of the garage with the DOOR OPEN, and the FPV signal drastically improved  when the quad was on the other side (with the door open there was one less object for the signal to penetrate).

First: antenna
I would maximize the performance of the antennae.
What type of antenna are you using on your goggles i.e. vertical, clover leaf, patch? vertical usually 3db gain, clover leaf usually 5db gain, patch 10+ db gain

Second: power output
From the ARRL: www.arrl.org/files/file/.../A%20Tutorial%20on%20the%20Dec-N0AX.pdf
every time you double your power you increase the db gain by about 3db, which in not a lot. So to apply the article to your equipment:

(the formula can be found in the above .pdf file page 4, equation 1)

USING TYPICAL VTX OUTPUT POWERS
25mw to 50mw = 3db gain
25mw to 100mw = 6db gain
25mw to 200mw = 9db gain
25mw to 600mw = 13db gain
25mw to 800mw= 15db gain

As you can see, no pun intended, it is not a cut and dry answer. You will need to experiment until you get what you want. Possibly borrow a friends
goggles or antennae to see if that will help you without putting out the cash.
Let us know how you solved your problem
