Building UAVFutures USD99 Racing Quad
#31
I can imagine a few readers are sitting back through this thread saying "Why doesn't he just buy it in one huge Banggood Order"? - The answer is simple, stock and price.  By buying some components elsewhere (www.myrcmart.com ni this case) I saved money which allowed the use of improved specification parts while sill in budget.

Secondly Banggood was constantly having components come into stock and then sell out.  Because I'm patient and needed to chase bargains to save money there's been ordering done based on that.

This is a good example.  I have been looking for alternative ESC options in the roughly the same price point, they were in stock, then out of stock, then finally stock is next due in late May!

Oh well?

Lucky I checked last night because....

BAM!

Back in stock!

The last part!
As I just posted the ESC came back into stock surprisingly early and I've pounced on it.

Ordered from Banggood:
Racerstar 4-in-1 20A ESC USD23.99 (https://www.banggood.com/Racerstar-RS20A...2252016071)

Total Spend:  USD113.56

This has ended up being a mere USD0.44 below my anticipated spend of USD114 worked out on Page 1 of the thread.  Except in this tally I have a box of propellers - so I'm prepared to say I have managed to save USD7.30 against the initial estimate!

I still need to buy:
  • FPV Goggles/DVR/Receiver
  • TX/RX combo to suit FPV/Acro flying
  • 4s Battery
The USD250 all-in price has around USD136 left to spend so I should be able to just do it!

I'm really looking forward to see how you build this when all the parts finally arrive.

Nice going! I am very anxious to see the build as well.

Frame, PDB and Flight Controller arrived yesterday from www.myrcmart.com

Very happy with the way it looks - FC came with more "stuff" than the (more expensive) F3 EVO clone I got via Banggood. Can't fault the packaging. No instructions came with the frame but I'm not that surprised.

I've yet to see a frame that comes with instructions, so they're not alone in that respect.

Even Armattan frames just come with a basic packing list. If you need help putting it together though, Chris always does a good assembly video where you can marvel at his accent while he guides you through the process. Wink

Everyone loves pics so here's the SPRacing F3 EVO Clone and the Matek PDB with BEC and Current Sensor.

I think the clone FC is a better one than provided by Banggood as it comes with more plugs and wires compared to the IR Led - of course if you were seriously into racing and wanted the onboard transponder you'd buy one of the Genuine articles, so the rest of us only want to use the LED function anyway.

The frame also arrived but I need to finish the Trifecta and clear some space before I even start considering photos.

lol nice to see you use the exact same PDB FC combo as I did. A sidenote, there is a special PDB for the EVO so you don't have to solder wires. You can just stack them on top of eachother with pinconnectors.

A VERY important information. If you choose to use DSHOT 600 on Betaflight, you have to remap the Motoroutput 4 to Output 5 and of course adjust your wiring.

(28-Apr-2017, 06:41 AM)Apicalis Wrote: The Motor remapping really worked. Like it's said in the link i had to input in CLI

resource MOTOR 5 NONE
resource MOTOR 4 A06

set motor_pwm_protocol = DSHOT600

save

Everything is working now, at least on the testbench Big Grin

Yeah I meant angle mode. I know changed my settings for the Modes so the first mode is Angle mode, the second one is Acro(no mode) + Airmode and the third is Acro alone. I don't need Horizon Mode anyway, going straight for Acro now that my Videofeed works properly except for the OSD.

I've see. Those SPRacing compatible/stackable PDBs are cool, I probably should have hung out for one but am happy with my choice Smile

At least initially I'll be pretty vanilla in setup because - will have to slow down acquisitions of FPV gear as we just jumped on tickets for the Malaysian F1 (and three weeks around Asia) so I should save a few dollars for spending money Smile

The trickle of parts arriving kept up with the FPV Transmitter (TX526 25/200/600mW Video Transmitter) arriving from Banggood.

By contrast to every other part thus far this came in its own box!

Only three packages (4 items) remain in transit.  Tracking says somewhere between China and Australia which generally means they're still in China.  I'd guess another week.

Stuff I hadn't considered:
  • Battery Strap
  • Camera mount if it doesn't mount in the frame itself

Stuff I still need to be flying FPV:
  • Receiver (preferably part of a Turnigy Evolution Pair)
  • 4S Battery (I have some 3S but really we want 4S for fun)
  • FPV Goggles
  • DVR (Record my fails!)

I'm kicking myself so much right now for not going with that VTx x.x

If you can wait for battery straps I happen to know a guy who has some awesome ones that I use exclusively, just saying

not sure what it'll do to the budget though :p

I would have liked to suggest the iRangeX (Clones of FlySky) iR-i6X (TX) and iR-A8s (RX) combo but sadly I can't confirm if the ones I got are actually working!? It could have been the FC, RX, TX or newb error that left me with no stick inputs coming through in betaflight. Not that I have anything to compare it to, but honestly, the build quality looks good and the gimbals feel silky, to me at least. It would shave about $10 off the 'go-to' branded FlySky options, and once the FW is properly updated/hacked (I can confirm that FW does update from FlySky) it should have plenty of channels to save feeling the need for an upgrade.

Remember that if you want to use this TX for simulators you will need to buy a separate cable, the one provided is a data cable for FW update only. Or you can very simply hack an S-video lead to a headphone jack with software from www.Smartpropoplus.com

I have posted my opinion on the EV800 goggles and Eachine pro DVR hack (total $70) on the other thread + $46.99 for this TX & RX combo gives you $117, which means, instead you could get the more expensive VR-D2 pro's ($89.99) suggested by sloScotty, and be just $1 over budget. It will also allow you to avoid hacking open some brand new FPV goggles to add the DVR you want, yeah rather spend the extra on the VR-D2 and save on the simulator cable hack!

I've cheated the budget slightly and dropped something like USD11 on the Flysky X6B Receiver about 5 minutes ago so I can just initially fly with my i6s TX (even if I leave it self-centering) and just drive in lazy circles for testing.

Was the most cost effective receiver that had the basic Flysky battery and RSSI telemetry functions.

This will mean I can spend a bit more on the Goggles in a few weeks when I get a bit of spare cash ($2k on airfares last week smoked the toy budget)

International Postage is a mystery - somethings turn up in mere days and others linger their way around the world (literally) over a month or so.

I'm going to assume one of these mysteries is why my Racerstar Motors arrived on Wednesday, but the Camera and Props ordered the same day, with the same shipping method from the same seller haven't arrived yet!

But yes!  We have these:  4x Racerstar BR2205 motors USD24.99 (https://www.banggood.com/4X-Racerstar-22...2252016071)

They came in individual boxes, with mounting screws and do feel like a decent quality motor - especially when the price is taken into consideration!
