[BUILD LOG] DIY Hardshell backpack
#1
Hi, I would like to show you my latest build!
Although it is not quad, it's connected. It is backpack made from plastic luggage. I am writting this log not as instruction (because I didn't take enough pictures), but as inspiration what you can make. You all have seen the LowePro Drone Guard backpacks recently, I have seen them too, but when I checked the price, I wasn't really happy (especially here in Czech Republic). So I started thinking and here you can see my idea came to life.

1) I started with luggage like this. It is made from tough plastic, however cou can cut it with dremel like tool. I put it on scale and it was 2074g, next I dissassembled it and striped non important pars like the wheels. These parts were 785g.

2)NEW SKILL ACHIEVED!!! I learned how to use sewing machine. All the sewing I did myself and I am proud of it. I started with inner compartment. I modified it with some foam insert and bungee strips for attaching tools etc. I left there also small handy pouch. In the second picture is finished part with tools and goodies test fitted.

3) Next thing to do were straps. I decided to take them from old backpack I won somewhere. I went with these, because they are light weigh, yet comfortable and strong enough. I prepared the straps like segment and them attached it to piece of wood and then screw it into place using original holes and screws.

4) Next I made lid compartent, again I used some older bags and cut some pieces from them I used, then I glued them in place, I wanted to make it modular so I add piece of velco and velcro pouch.

5) Then I made main compartment, It took me long time to decide how to make it and it ended up very good in my opinion. I bough in LIDL something called "Neoprene belly strap" it is neoprene strap with one side "velcro friendly", it cost me about +- 4 Euros and it was only thing I bought, the rest we had at home or my relatives had. In the middle where everything lies and glued thick (+-20mm) Polyurethan foam. Before gluing it in place I used my LIDL dremel tool and cut slots for starps which are holding quad and transmitter in place.

CONCLUSION:Empty weight is now 2655g. Finall product turned out pretty wel I am satisfied with the performance, It does not have almost any back padding and still it is very comfortable to wear. I also got some volcro padding I can put inside for more protection. Now I am thinking about how to attach more quads and stuff outside. I can put all my stuff inside so now I am looking forward for some FPV action in hard-to-get-by-car places. I will add more pics if you want. Hope you like it and sorry for long post.
Cheers from Czech Republic Smile

Hi, my mother had the suitcase laying at home for some time so I took it for free, the backpack I got also for free and the rest was just ordinary sewing supplies, so I would say I spend about 10 E  on velcro and the velcro-sticking-neoprene. But with the suitcase and the backpack it would be +- 30 Euros.
Thanks.
