Brought a taranis - what do I need to know?
#1
Hey all,

After spending a year thinking about buying a Taranis, mainly because I hate programming a full house sailplane in my XP9303 but also for RSSI etc; I finally gave in. The trigger was actually BG sending me an Frsky beecore FC and I don't want to wait 3 weeks for them replace it with a DSM model.

Not sure whether I'll get a DM9 module or just keep the 9303 for my DSM fleet as I don't plan on replace it all of my receivers. Depends whether or not I can get much for the 9303 now.

So as a Taranis newbie what do I need to know coming from JR? I'll probably flash the international firmware immediately as I don't care for EU regulations and certainly want maximum range.

Any recommended guides out there for full house sailplane programming? Any essential mods? There are a few things I'm surprised the Taranis doesn't have like centre detents on the side sliders and pots - I've seen guides on replacing those but seems like a lot of hassle so will see how I do without for now.

Any and all pointers appreciated.

there is one important mod without which your quads will have only 1/3 of range... and it will always rain... so better be prepared:

You can watch this series on youtube from Painless360, it helped me also a lot to understand everything.

I'm using the EU firmware and not have any problems with the limitations from the range or something else.

Thanks I'll take a look at these.  Are you using the FRsky version of OpenTX or the official OpenTX version?  I can't work out what the FRsky verison would provide over the vanilla OpenTX but I clearly have a lot more learning to do.

Flashed mine from EU-LBT to international firmware - mainly to ensure that I can do it and the sets are not region locked which some people had suggested in RCG forums.  At some point I'll do proper range tests but based on what Oscars blog said the international version should ultimately provide better range than the EU-LBT.

Two mods I'm already interested in are the Aurora 9 gimbal upgrade and the RP-SMA 5dBi antenna mods.

Check out this telemetry screen for mini quads:

I think i'm using the official OpenTX version, because i updated it with companion and not with the firmware from there website but i'm not sure about this, i don't know how i can see the diffrence.

What is the reason for your upgrades, i like the way it is and for me it's good enough.

Antenna simply because I plan to build a FX-79 with PixHawk for longer range FPV and experiments - so as much range as possible would be nice.  Initially I'll see what results I get but I would rather extend the range of the 2.4Ghz radio as opposed to going down the OpenLRS which may interfere with groundstation telemetry (think OpenLRS is also 433Mhz?).  The only issue with this mod is that if you accidentally turn on the TX without an antenna attached you can blow the RF module so I'll experiment before doing this.

Gimbals because I don't like the feel so much as my X9303 gimbals.  Also my OCD does not tolerate the fact that the gimbals don't rest at a solid '0' they fluctuate by a small amount.  If you go centre->left->centre or centre->right->centre the resting value at 'centre' is not the same.  Very small error but it irritates me.  I will try adding double-sided tape to the pot mounts first which I saw in RC groups but this will probably be my first mod.  The Aurora 9 gimbals are reported to be very good quality and are readily available from robotics stores.

I don't have any problems with my gimbals in my taranis transmitter, if i go from left to center or right to center i get every time the same value, it doesn't matter if i let them spring return from small distance or from far distance.

Perhaps I should tighten the springs a little and see how they are.
