BetaFPV Meteor 65 Pro 2022 w/ elrs built in serial RX
#1
Just got my Meteor 65 out of the box like an hour ago, in my attempt to flash the receiver through betaflight passthrough, it failed.
now when i plug it in to my pc, no lights come one and its not seen by betaflight
i plug a battery in and the esc beeps but no lights.
im a real rookie here, do i need a new fc?

any ideas on my next steps?
replace same fc and learn to flash correctly(maybe you can point me in the right direction how), or get a FC with a uart and get a dedicated RX, ive flashed those before. kind of a tight build for that with the stock furniture.

has this happened to anyone else? lol

any thoughts are greatly appreciated

(UPDATE: IT FLIES!!!)
so i decided not to flash do to the recently learned fact that this  built in rx has ELRS V3.x and simply needed "bound" with my radio.
to do so i had to plug and unplug the fc 3 times, to put the fc into binding mode, indicated by a quick double blink on the green rx light, then smacked the bind option in the elrs lua.
The biggest lesson i learned is, for some reason, not all usb ports on a pc motherboard are created equal. i simply plugged into a spare port on the back, fixing an issue i was having with betaflight connectivity(the lack of lights in fc as well)

i say all this to help a poor soul someday lol
Thanks yall Smile

Take the canopy off, fire up Betaflight, find the boot button, hold it down and insert the USB cable to the computer. Reflash it with the original firmware.

Then reflash the ELRS using elrs-configurator. So select target, build, build and install. If it's problematic, you need to go on the ELRS discord and ask questions, they are the experts on all things ELRS.

So has it happened to people before, yeah, a lot. That's the hobby. You do things, you break things badly, you troubleshoot the pile of electronics and if by some stroke of luck you didn't break things to a critical level, you fix them and learn something new. It's called doing a hobby that operates on the edge of Beta and is light years from anything rock solid stable. Just read the threads on here if you want confirmation. Buy it, break it, fix it, learn it, move on. Tongue

Saying that, the fact you have plugged in a battery and got no beeps is not a good sign. Generally if you fk up ELRS, the quad will still beep if you plug in a battery, it just won't fly.

tried the boot button, no signs of life in leds or betaflight com port.
thanks for the "Buy it, break it, fix it, learn it, move on. "
i needed that, felt like a real tool when i couldnt get this thing fired up.
ima order another fc and take my time lol
Thanks again

I am far from an expert on this but just a couple of things.

The "Boot Button" should take you into bootloader mode. Make sure you are using the "boot" button and not the "bind" button. With ELRS it may not have a bind button.
Maybe try holding the boot button and plug in a battery instead of the usb first, and then plug in the usb.

You also stated that you get the esc beeps when plugging in a battery but no leds. By esc beeps, do you mean the first three beeps, or the last two.

What were you flashing when it all went south?

Negative on another button, beta fpv's diagram of fc says one button "boot"( i looked as well)
the beeps, i just plugged a battery in again, i heard the three notes, followed by two
the flash, i fired up elrs config and set device for "betaFPV 2.4ghz" and the device category for "betaFPV 2.4ghz AIO RX" and flashing method was betaflight passthrough.
i didnt do anything in betaflight other than "diff all" and saved to another file for back up, before attemting to flashing rx.
oh yeah and i never put it in boot mode, should i have had it in bootloader to flash the rx in elrs config?
sorry, you may not be an expert, but ima real rookie here lol, thanks

So you are getting all five startup tones but no leds on the FC.

Bootloader mode is just for flashing Betaflight as far as I know.

If you were using the ELRS config, that should not affect the flight controllers code, just the RX.

This is rather puzzling and some of these questions are for a few of the folks on here that should respond as well. I am four years into this hobby, but have stayed away from some of the very technical aspects of it. I am newer to ELRS and had quite a time in the beginning but was helped out by the folks here. Most of my quads are SPI ELRS so I just go into the CLI and load my bind phrase and off I go. I have never had to flash a serial ELRS or used passthrough.

Check out one of my threads here trying to downgrade from ELRS 3 to ELRS 2 and still do not have it figured out...
https://intofpv.com/t-elrs-will-not-bind

Just hang in there and someone I'm sure will come up with an answer to your problem...

i did have it plugged in with no airflow for approximately 5-7 minutes before i realized the vtx was on!
do you think this could have anything to do with it, the heat maybe?
could have been closer to 10min or more honestly

I greatly appreciate even just what youve tried here, even if we cant get it fired up, it was a little morale boost Smile

Even if you don't have cooling on the VTX, at most you frag the VTX, it shouldn't do anything to the FC. If all you are doing is flashing and messing with the FC, it's not as cpu intensive as flying. For instance I was configuring an FC the other week, ie, without a VTX soldered on, but it was sat on my bench for 20 mins without cooling and I kept checking the cpu, but it was barely warm. Generally the first thing you should set on the VTX is the setting that sets the VTX to the lowest power level on disarm, which sets it to 25mW. If you have Pit mode that will wokrk as well, but I set all of mine to use 25 when disarmed. I've never had an issue.

I have serial ELRS on a couple of mine. For ELRS I tend to flash the same version I've been using for the last 18 months, which for me is 2.5 and it just works. I don't mess with the latest version. The one I use works fine so I'm not going to go out of my way to create more problems. Wink I'm guessing you have a radio running ELRS 3 and the quad came with 2, hence the need to reflash. Just be aware that as long as the quad and radio are on the same major version, it will work. So if the radio has ELRS 3.0.1 and the quad had say 3.2, that would be fine. But if the radio had ELRS 2 and the quad had ELRS 3, that wouldn't work.

Oh and be aware that it's massively easy to flash the wrong firmware. Make sure the version you are flashing is the one for the quad, not for the radio. I nearly did this last time I flashed something.

If you are sure you have the ELRS version and you can't flash the receiver, follow this protocol:
1. Unplug everything.
2. Hold down the boot button on the FC while plugging in USB.
3. Open Betaflight Configurator, click "Exit DFU mode", then close Betaflight.
4. Open ELRS Configurator, and flash according to the flashing guide, selecting the "BetaFPV 2.4GHz AIO RX" target
https://www.expresslrs.org/quick-start/r...assthrough

If you encounter an error, post the log from the flashing attempt.
